AIMA staff reinforced. The Government will strengthen the Integration, Migration and Asylum Agency (AIMA) with an additional 64 workers. Three bidding processes have been published in the Official Gazette of the Union to fill 64 vacancies in various categories. The larger competition aims to recruit 50 workers for AIMA stores. Most of them with two employees – in Albufeira, Faro, Portimão, Beja, Portalegre, Évora, Odemira, Bragança, Guarda, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Alverca, Cacém and Odivelas -, while those in Lisbon and Setúbal will be reinforced with four employees, Cascais with six and Porto with eight. The competition will be open for ten working days, counting from the day of advertising on the Public Employment Exchange (BEP). The workers will occupy the position of technical assistant, with an employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period. The second competition, with the same deadlines and procedures, aims to fill “ten jobs in the general category and career of technical assistant, from the AIMA personnel map”. The third intends to reinforce the National Center for Asylum and Refugees (CNAR) with four people who will enter the AIMA staff map in the general category and career of a technical assistant. The Government defined as a priority the reorganisation of AIMA's powers and the reinforcement of resources so that the agency functions “fully, equipped with the necessary resources to ensure a quick and effective response in matters of documentation, reception and integration of immigrants in the country”, reads the State Budget for 2025. For next year, 19 million euros are allocated to AIMA. #RelocationPortugal #MoveToPortugal #ExpatsInLisbon #DigitalNomadsPortugal #LivingInPortugal #VisaSupportPortugal #HomeFindingLisbon #Umzugnach #visas

Portugal: recognising the benefits Portugal utilises the potential of non-EU nationals more successfully than many member states – particularly compared to countries in Southern Europe. Migrants holding a degree are considerably less likely to find themselves unemployed or overqualified than on average in Europe. Meanwhile, the most common jobs for migrants with a degree reflect those of natives: teaching, nursing, engineering and finance. Dr. Sinem Yilmaz from the Migration Policy Group think-tank credits Portugal’s focus on entrepreneurship and the presence of a strong NGO sector. "Portugal knows how to make the most of its highly skilled migrant population." Policies such as free language programmes, mentorships and skills training are also effective in facilitating labour market integration. Furthermore, asylum seekers are allowed to work after one month of being in Portugal – considerably shorter than the EU average of seven months. Despite the recent success of the far-right, another decisive factor is cohesion: in 2021, a survey by the EU found almost three-quarters of Portuguese citizens believed integration of people with a migratory background had been successful.

❕ ''Understanding how technological adoption affects migrant employment patterns is crucial for addressing challenges related to social integration, economic well-being and societal cohesion.'' In the Horizon GS4S project I have the immense privilege of learning from The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) researchers. If you are interested in understanding the level of labor migration in the EU, and how labor force has been impacted by the recent technological advancements, I strongly recommend this insightful read.

💼 Exploring Employability for Skilled Migrants: A Path with Complex Challenges and Opportunities Just finished reading a systematic review by Farashah et al. on the employability of skilled migrants, and it offers a revealing look into the unique challenges and career paths faced by highly educated migrants. The review emphasises how individual skills (like adaptability and language proficiency) and external factors (like regulatory support or labour market demand) converge to shape perceived employability. For skilled migrants, employability isn't just about their qualifications; it’s a mix of individual strengths and structural factors. The paper introduces strategies like “broadening” (think local qualifications or networking) and “transition conditions” (job market demand, organisational openness), showing that employability is dynamic and context-sensitive. This has me thinking: as professionals working across borders, how do we contribute to creating inclusive environments that recognise and elevate diverse skills? This is especially important for policies and corporate practices that genuinely support talent mobility and ensure valuable contributions from skilled migrants. 🌍 If you're interested in how employability frameworks can reshape the talent landscape, read it! #GlobalTalent #Employability #DiversityInclusion #SkilledMigration #CareerDevelopment #HumanResources

🌍 Digital Tools for Inclusion: Cluj-Napoca's Approach to newcomers Integration 💻 Migrants frequently encounter difficulties in accessing information about their legal rights, healthcare, education, housing, and employment. The multitude and variety of existing websites complicate their efforts, presenting significant challenges. Therefore, digital inclusion is vital for their integration. "One Stop Shop" websites offer an ideal solution by centralizing information, simplifying access to rights, and providing both emotional and practical support. In that manner, the Cluj-Napoca city council has launched the innovative 'welcometocluj' website, offering services in six different languages to long-term residents and newcomers. This platform covers fields such as education, social matters, and everyday life topics, with future plans to include Artificial Intelligence and live chat for an enhanced user experience. The city's digital inclusion efforts help migrants overcome their difficulties and encourage them to fully participate in the economic, social, and cultural life of the city. This example supports the digital inclusion of newcomers, promoting a more inclusive and connected world, aligning with the commitments pursued by the WELDI network. 📰 To learn more about about Cluj-Napoca's innovative digital integration efforts, read our detailed article here: https://lnkd.in/ePBwkKzZ 🌐 URBACT #WELDI #ClujNapoca #HumanRights #Welcommunities

🌏 Global South Paper of the Month! "Filipino migrant workers’ leisure and subjective quality of life in Macao" by Jaeyeon Choe O' Regan, PhD, Michael J. O' Regan, PhD & Albert Kimbu. Available in free access in World Leisure Journal, the official #journal of World Leisure Organization: https://lnkd.in/ggFCGVGP ABSTRACT Utilizing 14 semi-structured interviews in a non-western context, this exploratory study examines how Filipino migrant workers’ leisure satisfaction and QoL are intertwined in Macao, China. The study reveals that Filipino migrant workers regard “family and friends”, and a sense of community as central to their QoL. Regarding leisure, the Filipino migrant workers experienced a lack of time-off and long working hours (structural leisure constraints) whilst living without their families in the Philippines (interpersonal leisure constraints). In addition, the Filipino migrant workers noted that few leisure options were available to them, and given commercial options dominate in Macao, the perceived cost of leisure participation clashes with the Filipino migrant workers responsibility to send remittances home. It is recommended that authorities and employers explore the importance of subjective QoL indicators such as sense of community that emerge from marginalized social groups, such as migrant workers, into their measurement systems and policy deliberations, to create a livable and sustainable community for all. Our study enriches the extant research by broadening the research location to focus on “voices” from low income migrants in a non-western context. #research #leisure #leisurestudies #community #filipino #migrant #migration #macao #china
