Happy Labour Day everyone! According to the International Labor Organisation, migrant workers have a right to receive assistance in their mother tongue or at the very least, a language they understand. The Migrant Workers Recommendation (1975) requires countries to “inform migrant workers of their rights in a language with which they are familiar, advance workers’ knowledge of the language of the country… while encouraging the preservation of the migrant workers’ national and ethnic identity and cultural ties with their country of origin.” In an increasingly digital world, it’s important that we champion digital language diversity so that millions of migrant workers worldwide can have a clear understanding of their rights and the ability to remain close to their original cultures.
