Donald Trump's 46% tariffs will crush Vietnam's export economy—unless a deal is struck. There are just days left. The tariffs could cut growth in half by 2026, jeopardizing what Vietnam's leader, To Lam, calls the "era of national rise." A diplomatic scramble is under way. To Lam has proposed that both Vietnam and the US lower tariffs to 0% on each other's goods. The Vietnamese side is desperately hoping past attempts to appease Trump will pay off. (Conveniently, a new $1.5bn Trump Organization golf course opens near Hanoi next month.) If no deal can be found in the short term, there may be some small silver linings for Vietnam. One is that the foreign-direct investors who have propelled Vietnamese export growth probably won't leave in a hurry. Another, as Thang Nguyen-Quoc, Ph.D. points out, is we might soon get a dong devaluation, boosting Vietnam's exports to other markets. Thanks also to Nguyen Khac Giang for his insights!
