Few presidents have tried harder to remove Argentina from the IMF’s books. The question is whether his vim can overcome his country’s spendthrift tendencies https://lnkd.in/d66VVM4v Photo: Getty Images
What?!!!! No WAY!! Ha ha! You did it man. Wow,… I am Soooo proud of you, sir. GOOD JOB!
Ok, remember over half of people are in poverty.
The problem of Argentina is that it has a semi-industrialized economy with a large agricultural commodities sector. With a very urbanized population and persistent inequality. This is a recipe for persistent economic problems since the urban population is mostly employed in the service sector and in mostly non-transactional goods. This leads to recurrent problems of balance of payments, that can be caused or amplified by the variation in international commodity prices. National politics also doesn't help, but a key period is the transition from the last Peron admnistration that eventually led to the military junta. This period of pratically civil war and of killing of cadres and middle class is a scar that will take more than a century to heal. The Argentinian admnistrations of the last 40 years have mostly balanced between patronage and shock terapies that don't solve the underlying problems.
