When I told her that I wanted to learn more about the ecosystem bridging devices and care, she recommended I apply! I knew about CBIT from being a Biomedical Engineering major and having gone to a couple Yale Healthcare Hackathons as well." 💡 Opportunities at CBIT: “Definitely meeting people like Margaret, Michelle, and David, who know a LOT about entrepreneurship at Yale. They’re quite passionate about helping medical ideas at Yale grow, and that’s been a huge factor in cultivating a frame of mind in me to think about how I can create things to improve human care and think about healthcare more holistically.” 🧩 Impactful Project: ”One project I learned a lot from was building a database to house all the CBIT projects, and a pipeline to connect new projects with mentors and keep teams on track. You see quite generally the diversity of processes ventures can go through, whether in ideation or having already raised funding. We recently organized our second get-together for PhDs and PostDocs, in collaboration with Gateway Excellence Start-up Center University of Cologne and Longevity Biotech Fellowship, to discuss the hurdles and opportunities in founding a life science company in Germany. 🌟 We were fortunate to have Carlos A. Chacón-Martínez join us, who successfully founded his company niostem after completing his post-doc in Cologne. 💡 We started by discussing: ◽ How to identify inventions in your research. ◽ How to protect and confidentially discuss them. ◽ Different non-dilutive funding programs to take the first steps towards spinning off a company while still being at university 🚀 Carlos then took us on his founding journey, sharing the highs and lows of start-up life. 💼 One of the major challenges discussed? The Endgegner: German bureaucracy! - Or as I like to call it, bureau-crazy! 🤯 🌍 Many international attendees shared their experiences of founding companies in their home countries. University of Galway has conferred honorary Doctorates of Science upon Professor Paul Yock and Dr Josh Makower, founders of Stanford Biodesign. This recognition celebrates their groundbreaking contributions to medical technology innovation and their pivotal role in shaping the transformative partnership between Stanford Biodesign and BioInnovate Ireland , a flagship programme at University of Galway. The enduring partnership between Stanford Biodesign and BioInnovate has catalysed innovations that have improved the lives of thousands globally. It has also nurtured a culture of mentorship and giving back that is particularly strong in the medtech community. Through this ethos, BioInnovate alumni—who have benefited from support and guidance—are now empowering the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs. University of Birmingham Enterprise was proud to host the inaugural meeting of the UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association Midlands Group today at Birmingham Research Park. The Midlands Group will bring together key players to collaborate and build stronger connections across a region that is already renowned for innovation in medical technologies, data driven health, green energy and advanced manufacturing, and is now going from strength to strength. This renaissance is being spurred on by progress on many fronts. The delegates heard from David Coleman, CEO of University of Birmingham Enterprise about Midlands Mindforge, a patient capital company founded by eight research-intensive universities in the Midlands that aims to provide capital and company-building skills to university spinouts and early-stage IP rich businesses. He said: “This is a truly exciting time to be in the Midlands. Our landscape has evolved quickly, with many corporate businesses now in the region. We are now enriching the offering for innovators, so we can deliver even greater connectivity than before.” While the Birmingham Research Park provides a landing ground and incubation spaces for innovators, it will soon be complemented by the Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA Ltd). The PHTA will open later this year, providing grow-on space on the University of Birmingham campus, so companies can remain in close proximity to the wide range of clinical research, and the leading teams and key opinion leaders at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Health Partners. Another great set of panel discussions at the Bisnow Seattle Life Sciences Conference. Some key takeaways: - Seattle and the PNW remains a top 5 Life Science region. - Startups continue to spin out of the local academic institutions at a high rate with the ability to do more with less (people, capital, space) thanks in large part to access to shared resources (spec lab suites, core facilities), infrastructure (AWS, Azure) and advanced technology (AI) at lower cost. - Higher Interest rates and changing economic conditions are resulting in decreased venture capital funding for startups, and difficulty accessing debt for developers. - Adaptability and flexibility are more important than ever in the built space to accommodate the rate of change in the scientific needs, especially with the adoption of more automated lab processes. Beyond just mobile lab benching, demountable partition solutions that allow labs to be reconfigured on short order are gaining in popularity, offer unique tax benefits, and support organizations' sustainability goals.
