We are delighted to announce that our new Chair will be Jonathan Pearson, a highly experienced health business leader.  Jonathan has been the Chair of Birmingham Health Partners for the last 18 months and is a co-founder and Chair of Virtue Health Group, which provides technology-enabled hospital level care in the home. He will take up the post in July, taking over from Professor Michael Sheppard who has led the organisation since its inception 12 years ago.   Jonathan said: “I am looking forward to taking on this new role and working with partners across the West Midlands, nationally and internationally, to develop and deploy innovations which transform healthcare.  “My aim is to ensure we work together across the region to adopt the best innovations, to benefit all parts of our population.” Read our full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eYdc8fXk

Spotting this chalk board on a sunny walk on #InternationalWomensDay was a timely remember of the Birmingham Health Partners Policy Commission on medicines in pregnancy that I was involved in back in 2022. Globally, at the time of publication, over 800 women and 12,000 babies were dying every day from preventable pregnancy-related complications. That is one woman and 17 babies every two minutes. Yet only two medicines had ever been developed specifically for pregnancy-related conditions, and not a single new medicine for the most serious pregnancy-specific conditions had reached women in decades. While pregnancy in the UK is generally considered safe, preventable pregnancy complications and harm very sadly persist, and the hardest hit are those already experiencing inequality. It is well recognised that women's health is generally under-invested in. When you consider this from the perspective of pregnancy and our earliest years, women's health really is everyone's health. Pregnancy complications affect two lives in one short period of time, and have ramifications far beyond the immediate outcomes of the pregnancy. Home-Starts regularly support families who have experienced bereavement or health challenges during the earliest years, and see first hand the impact this can have on the wellbeing of the whole family. The commission's report set out strong recommendations including: 💡 Effective and collective advocacy for medicines in pregnancy 💡 Increased opportunities for pregnant women to take part in clinical trials 💡 Incentivising industry to develop pregnancy-specific medicines 💡 Establishing a UK-wide national network of research centres 💡 Improving use of routine clinical care maternity data With the theme of #InternationalWomensDay being #AccelerateAction towards women's equality, this is one of many areas where acceleration could have global and generational impact.
