Smothering accounts for around 21% of deaths in laying hens. But why do hens smother? And what can be done to tackle this industry-wide challenge? Understanding the causes and consequences of this behaviour is the aim of SmotherSense, a BBSRC-funded collaborative research project with The Lakes Free Range Egg Company and Newcastle University. Using data from FAI’s innovative farm management system BirdBox, the study shows piling, the clustering of large densities of birds which can lead to smothering, is more common than anticipated. It can also affect production, even without smothering-related deaths. We are now exploring the development of a novel BirdBox alert to indicate when flocks are at increased risk of smothering.
