Lately, it seems like you can’t go more than two days without hearing about a space conference. Like space-based services themselves, space conferences of all flavors are becoming ubiquitous and the tools of choice for collaboration and industry legitimacy. While each forum claims to be the most essential for advancing our global space efforts, there is only one conference that has the pedigree to walk the walk in meeting the demands of the new space era: The International Astronautical Congress (IAC). A product of the Cold War, the IAC began in 1950 with only 20 space enthusiasts from 8 countries seeking to establish an international conversation about space and to avoid the terrible lessons learned from WWII. 75 iterations later, it remains a vibrant venue for all things space. The backbone of the IAC is the International Astronautical Federation, an entity currently consisting of 513 organizations from 77 countries. It's a diverse group that brings international space agencies, universities, professional associations and societies, industry, R&D organizations, and museums together each year at the IAC. The IAC is the broadest space gathering there is and, if you are a sincere advocate for space and its power to change the course of human history, then this conference should be at the top of your list. The IAC stands as a cooperative remedy to the concerning world of great power competition. Where else, outside the UN structure, do government and non-government officials from the U.S., Europe, and Japan routinely engage with China, Russia, and Iran on anything all in one place? Space is by nature a global endeavor and, therefore, should have a proven global apparatus like this. Other space conferences certainly have value, but they are usually geared towards a specific audience like the commercial space industry, think tanks, the scientific community, or the military, and often exclude other crucial nations, regions or industries. I believe the IAC is imperative in the modern strategic environment and still a critical mechanism in guiding our global space efforts, which is why I will be attending the 75th IAC next week in Milan. I know, I know…it’s not the best tour of duty location but somehow, I’ll get through it. 😔 I hope to see many of my space paisanos there to discuss some of the important topics on the agenda. Feel free to reach out if you want to connect in person! #IAC2024 #SpacePolicy #SpaceStrategy #SpaceExploration #Milan

2025: A Pivotal Year for European Space Policy The European space landscape is entering a new phase in 2025. As global competition intensifies and new challenges emerge, the year ahead offers an opportunity to align our strategies with updates to the European Union's space-related policies, such as the Space Strategy for Europe. This week, the 17th European Space Conference in Brussels set the stage for the key discussions that will shape space policy in 2025. From sustainability and technological leadership to Europe's role in an evolving global space economy, the conference underscored the need for a coordinated approach to maintaining Europe’s competitive edge. For organizations like SPACE AISBL and the Globally Competitive Space Systems (GCSS) Partnership, responding proactively to these policy updates is not just a necessity—it’s a chance to help shape the future of European space innovation. These policies serve as a foundation for driving sustainable growth, fostering collaboration, and ensuring Europe’s leadership in the global space economy. Our objective in 2025 is to integrate these evolving policy frameworks into SPACE AISBL’s strategic direction. This means: • Aligning with Priorities: Ensuring that our initiatives support the overarching goals of the Space Strategy for Europe, including sustainability, technological leadership, and international collaboration. • Driving Stakeholder Engagement: Providing a platform for the European space community to contribute to policy discussions, helping to refine and implement strategic objectives. • Facilitating Innovation: Leveraging the guidance of updated policies to support cutting-edge projects that enhance Europe's global competitiveness. As we move forward, the discussions from this week’s European Space Conference provide a crucial reference point for the year ahead. What are your key takeaways from the conference, and what do you see as the most pressing priorities for the European space policy in 2025? And with potential relevance to the Partnership scope? Let's continue the conversation. #EuropeanSpacePolicy #SpaceStrategyForEurope #SPACEAISBL #GCSSPartnership #Sustainability #Innovation #EUspace ASD-Eurospace SME4SPACE Association of European Space Research Establishments (ESRE) EASTRO EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network

Today Italy celebrates National Space Day, an important occasion to commemorate the launch of Italy's first satellite, San Marco 1, on December 15, 1964. This milestone made Italy the third country in the world and the first in Europe to launch an entirely domestically-built artificial satellite into orbit. As emphasized by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, today the aerospace sector is a key driver of innovation, technological development, and economic growth for our country. It not only supports national security and industrial policies but also creates new opportunities for young people, especially in Stem fields. The aerospace industry has become one of the main engines of Italy’s development, positively influencing all other sectors. The future is increasingly tied to scientific and technological expertise, and it is on these young talents that Italy relies for growth and innovation. Follow us to keep exploring the world of Space Economy and the incredible opportunities it is creating for our future.
