✨ Here is the latest development from our member RTO - ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab 👏 Quantum I Towards the correction of time drifts in inertial units Building on its experience with quantum gravimeters, ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab has just developed a simple method for simultaneously correcting the drifts of a conventional accelerometer and gyroscope. These two types of coupled instrument would enable positioning without the need for a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This positioning capability is crucial in the aerospace and defense industries, as the satellite signal can be jammed, distorted or inaccessible. It requires an instrument called an inertial measurement system, comprising accelerometers and gyrometers. However, the drift of the sensors currently in use results in a positioning error that increases over time. The ONERA method is based on the use of a gas of rubidium atoms cooled to a few μK above absolute zero. At this temperature, the quantum properties of matter are fully manifested, and the gas of cold atoms behaves like a wave, making it possible to create an interferometer sensitive to rotation and acceleration. ONERA has just experimentally validated a new way of imparting initial velocity to cold atoms. atoms. Instead of the usual technique using lasers, the researchers have resorted to a magnetic field gradient field created by two coils, which produces a force known as the Stern-Gerlach force on the atoms. Using this they demonstrated that it was possible to correct the long-term drift of a conventional accelerometer and gyrometer. The advantage of the method developed here is its simplicity, making it compatible with a sensor capable of measuring all components of the rotation and acceleration vectors. This study, carried out in in collaboration with the CNAM as part of the CHAMOIS research project and a thesis* co-financed by the Agence d'Innovation de Défense and the École doctorale de Paris-Saclay, will be pursued with the dual aim of boosting performance and enabling this quantum technology to be embedded. *Work published in the prestigious journal Science Advances: https://lnkd.in/daAhX8KS
