🌏 Global South Paper of the Month! "Filipino migrant workers’ leisure and subjective quality of life in Macao" by Jaeyeon Choe O' Regan, PhD, Michael J. O' Regan, PhD & Albert Kimbu. Available in free access in World Leisure Journal, the official #journal of World Leisure Organization: https://lnkd.in/ggFCGVGP ABSTRACT Utilizing 14 semi-structured interviews in a non-western context, this exploratory study examines how Filipino migrant workers’ leisure satisfaction and QoL are intertwined in Macao, China. The study reveals that Filipino migrant workers regard “family and friends”, and a sense of community as central to their QoL. Regarding leisure, the Filipino migrant workers experienced a lack of time-off and long working hours (structural leisure constraints) whilst living without their families in the Philippines (interpersonal leisure constraints). In addition, the Filipino migrant workers noted that few leisure options were available to them, and given commercial options dominate in Macao, the perceived cost of leisure participation clashes with the Filipino migrant workers responsibility to send remittances home. It is recommended that authorities and employers explore the importance of subjective QoL indicators such as sense of community that emerge from marginalized social groups, such as migrant workers, into their measurement systems and policy deliberations, to create a livable and sustainable community for all. 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐎𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐔𝐄 𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓: 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 Airports are often associated with excitement, as they are considered gateways to thrilling adventures and dream vacations. But airports also symbolize painful goodbyes when individuals leave behind their homes and loved ones in pursuit of dreams for a better life for themselves and their families. This is the case for many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, there were 1.96 million migrant Filipino workers from April to September 2022. The top destinations for OFWs include Saudi Arabia (23%), Kuwait (7.7%), Hong Kong (6.1%), and Qatar (5.8%). However, these figures merely scratch the surface and do not take into account undocumented workers. OFWs face numerous challenges, including premigration issues, such as illegal recruitment and contract substitution. Once abroad, some OFWs have to deal with excessive work hours and other maltreatment from their employers (especially migrant domestic workers in the Middle East). In extreme cases, those without legal papers live under the radar to avoid deportation, a situation known as “tago nang tago” or TNT. A wealth of studies related to it are available in SERP-P. [Factsheet Publication] The "Ship to Shore Rights Project South-East Asia," a joint initiative by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), focuses on improving labor rights in the fishing sector across Southeast Asia from August 2020 to July 2024. Targeting countries like Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, the project aims to foster safe and regular labor migration by enhancing regulatory frameworks that protect migrant workers. Key achievements of the project include the adoption of the ASEAN Declaration on the Placement and Protection of Migrant Fishers, which marks a significant step in regional policy harmonization. The project has also facilitated important exchanges on labor practices between the Indonesian and Thai seafood sectors and established the first Migrant Resource Center in Tegal, Central Java, significantly empowering local migrant workers. This initiative exemplifies effective international collaboration aimed at enhancing the working conditions of vulnerable workers in the global economy. It highlights the importance of harmonizing legal frameworks and strengthening unions to ensure fair and safe labor migration.
