Just attended the Retech Days Europe on behalf of AfB Group on circular economy and refurbishment of IT products, organized by Dataxis, and here are some key takeaways! 🤓 📉 Price Over Sustainability: It's evident that price remains the main driver for purchasing refurbished mobile phones. While consumers express a desire for greener products, they prioritize cost-effectiveness. This underscores the need for the refurbishing industry to maintain competitive pricing without compromising on sustainability. 📜 Policy as a Market Driver: - Right to Repair: Policies like the reparability index in France are crucial for the growth of the refurbishing industry. Enforcing the right to repair can significantly enhance product longevity and consumer trust. - Public Sector Leadership: France's mandate for public institutions to purchase at least 10% of their IT products as refurbished sets a strong example. Such policies have the potential to boost the refurbishing market in the coming years. - Standardizing Quality Evaluation: There's a pressing need to standardize the grading of refurbished products. This would level the playing field among refurbishers, enhance market transparency, and build consumer confidence in refurbished goods. 🔧 Designing for Repairability: There's substantial room for improvement in designing mainstream products with repairability in mind.
