It was good to be able to support the BAE Systems team at Thursday’s careers fair in Bristol, aimed specifically at those affected by Dyson’s recent redundancy announcement. I could not fail to be struck by the enthusiasm, capability, and passion displayed by those seeking new positions. I met people with apprenticeships cut short, others with a few years’ postgraduate experience, and those with a wealth of engineering experience to take to their next role. As an engineer, I’ve been taught to look beyond the obvious and discern what’s missing, so let’s not lose sight of anyone impacted but unable to attend: maybe busy, maybe unwell, or maybe feeling overwhelmed and in need of a friendly chat. In a world of often-bewildering recruitment processes, I was encouraged by the range and number of UK-based engineering companies attending, all stepping up for the event at short notice. Businesses attend these events to achieve recruitment targets and fill talent gaps, but as individuals we were also there to support those affected and help each one to answer the big and unexpected question of “what next?”. The corporate sales pitches swiftly turned to more personal, tailored conversations and practical careers advice.
