As tariffs, mineral supply chain risks, and battery fires dominate headlines, XL Batteries is building a different path forward. Our project with Stolthaven Terminals marks the commercial debut of our nonflammable, water-based Organic Flow Battery™. With a U.S.-developed and U.S.-made molecule at the core, our energy storage solution is built without critical minerals and without the fire risk associated with lithium-ion technologies. The result? A safer, scalable, and supply chain-resilient solution — a meaningful step forward for long-duration energy storage. Today, China controls over 90% of lithium-ion battery raw material production. XL’s technology avoids that dependency entirely, offering a path insulated from geopolitically sensitive materials, tariffs, and trade policy. Grateful to Phoebe Skok, MAS at pv magazine Global for highlighting this project and the broader potential of our technology.

We are pleased to share the latest progress in our partnership with XL Batteries to deploy an organic flow battery with industrial-scale electricity storage capability at our Houston terminal. Our President, Guy Bessant, was in Houston recently and saw the newly installed battery. He said: "Long-term energy storage is critical for the global transition to greener energy alternatives. This partnership brings together XL Batteries’ expertise and innovations in flow battery technology and Stolthaven Terminals’ global presence in providing bulk liquid services.”
Big news for XL Batteries — we’re thrilled to be featured in an exclusive TechCrunch story announcing the commissioning of our first pilot project in Texas. In partnership with Stolthaven Terminals, a global leader in petrochemical storage, we’re repurposing existing infrastructure to deploy ultra-low-cost, long-duration energy storage powered by our proprietary organic flow battery. Our team is rethinking grid-scale storage by harnessing abundant organic chemistry and modular design to build safer, more durable, and capital-efficient solutions for the energy transition — and we’re just getting started. Huge thanks to Tim De Chant for the feature!

The most recent outlook report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) only supports that as the world’s demand for energy increases that we will need a mix of solutions and that specifically for renewables it is imperative for them to be connected with long duration energy storage such as the projects which Stolthaven is working on.

“If we took two of [Stolthaven’s] biggest tanks, it’d be a 700 megawatt-hour battery,” Sisto said. That’s enough to power around 25,000 homes for a entire day. “I believe they have 400 tanks on their site in Houston.” Congratulations to Thomas Sisto and the XL Batteries team on a massive step towards ultra-low-cost, grid-scale energy storage.

Today, XL Batteries shipped their first commercial unit to Houston. It's a milestone in their quest to solve a $4 trillion problem: grid-scale energy storage. The story began in 2019 at Columbia University, when Thomas Sisto and his team made an unexpected discovery: They found organic molecules that never degraded during charge-discharge cycles. This wasn't just another battery breakthrough. It was the foundation for: → 50+ year battery life → Non-flammable chemistry → Grid-scale storage capability → Significantly lower costs than current solutions But Sisto knew technical innovation wasn't enough. He assembled an elite team including: → Co-founder/CTO of A123 Systems (largest battery IPO of 2009) → Pfizer's EVP of global chemical manufacturing → VP of Engineering from Plug Power Their approach? Don't reinvent the wheel. Instead of creating new battery architecture, they improved an existing one: → Took NASA's 50-year-old flow battery design → Replaced expensive vanadium/sulfuric acid → Used organic molecules in saltwater instead The result: a battery that can store energy for 12-100 hours. (For context: lithium batteries max out at 8 hours) After raising $20M, they're now moving from lab to field: → First unit shipped today → Already finding unexpected challenges → Learning more in days than months in the lab Their vision: transform energy infrastructure the same way oil and gas did. Just launched a new episode with Thomas Sisto on Category Visionaries. Strong start to the 3-day ERCOT Market Summit in Austin, TX! Texas is experiencing unprecedented energy demand growth alongside a massive shift to renewables—leading the nation in wind and solar generation. By 2030, ERCOT must meet 60+ GW of new load from AI data centers, oil production electrification, and population growth. Over the next few days, we’re diving deep into market dynamics, policy shifts, and investment trends shaping the future of generation and storage. As the largest renewable energy producer in the U.S., Texas offers critical insights into the evolution of the entire U.S. grid. At XL Batteries, we’re engaging with stakeholders across the ecosystem to highlight how these shifts create new opportunities for long-duration energy storage. As ERCOT evolves, innovative storage solutions will be key to balancing intermittent renewables, delivering firm and reliable power, and—most importantly—lowering electricity costs. Great to catch up with folks and make new connections as we work together to transform how the world is powered. Looking forward to the discussions ahead! #ERCOT #EnergyStorage #LDES #GridInnovation
