Why is Alex growing that creepy mustache? For the last several years I have been growing a mustache for charity. Famously referred to by one former colleague as “disgusting.” I do this in support of the The Movember Foundation. Movember puts your donations toward men's health initiatives, specifically ones in men's mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Having been indirectly impacted by these conditions, this small exercise is a way for me to raise awareness and funds about these issues and hopefully contribute to something that helps the men in my life and across the world live longer, healthier lives. Over the last 6 years through the generosity of friends, family, and colleagues I have been able to raise over $11,000! I’m hoping to get that total number up beyond $12,000 this year and humbly ask for your help. Thank you to our collaborators Elexandrea (Elex) Scheels, Jill Scheer, and David Kuzmanoski for working tirelessly with us to make our work at AMCP Nexus a reality. #marketaccess
CVD affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide- behind these numbers are loved ones, friends and colleagues. We are likely to know someone who lives with CVD and who we may lose too soon from it. We have the power to change this by working together to address the factors that cause or worsen CVD. This starts with education and awareness. My cardiovascular team and I attended AMCP Nexus in Las Vegas in mid-October. We sponsored a spotlight session on the impact of Lp(a) and the importance of testing. Additionally, we presented a published poster, The Cost of PCSK9 mAb Waste - Results from a Pateint Reported Survey on PCSK9 mAb Compliance and Discontinuation. Elevated Lp(a) is a genetically determined condition that increases the chance of heart attack or stroke by 2-4 times and its relatively unknown; providing education now is necessary. High levels of LDL-C is a modifiable risk factor for CVD; unfortunately patients may fail to reach target levels, partly due to poor adherence to their medications. I’m so proud of the team and look forward to continuing our efforts help people with CVD enjoy longer, healthier lives and more time with their loved ones.
