The SPRINT project develops sustainable and cost-effective sodium-ion batteries to optimize stationary energy storage.
About us
The Horizon Europe SPRINT project aims to revolutionize stationary energy storage by developing cost-effective and sustainable sodium-ion batteries. Over 46 months, a consortium of 8 industries, 2 SMEs, and 8 academic partners will optimize and demonstrate two safe, quasi-solid-state sodium-ion batteries for stationnary applications. These batteries will use abundant, non-toxic materials from EU supply chains, including innovative NaFePO4 cathode, hard-carbon materials, and quasi-solid polymer electrolytes. The project will also scale up dry electrode processing to enhance sustainability. Demonstrations will take place in Austria and Lithuania, and additional contexts (e.g. Africa, India, etc.) will be studied. SPRINT aims to reduce costs, improve energy density and power metrics, extend battery life, and ensure safe operation, paving the way for high market penetration. This project received funding from the EU’s Horizon Europe Research & Innovation programme under Grant Agreement n°101191903.

🌍⚡ Introducing the SPRINT - Horizon Europe project! ⚡🌍 🔋 As the EU accelerates its transition to climate neutrality, the demand for sustainable and efficient stationary energy storage is rising. While lithium-ion batteries dominate the market, challenges such as critical raw material dependencies, cost volatility, safety risks, and environmental impact highlight the need for alternative solutions. Sodium-ion batteries offer a promising path, but improvements in energy density, cycle life, and large-scale manufacturability are crucial for their competitiveness. 🚀 SPRINT - Horizon Europe is tackling these challenges with cutting-edge innovations in electrode design and scalable manufacturing, leveraging safe, abundant, and cost-effective materials. By optimising quasi-solid-state polymer composite electrolytes, ensuring rapid upscaling, and demonstrating two high-performance batteries, SRPINT aims to revolutionise the sector—boosting sustainability, safety, and cost-efficiency. 📅 On January 29-30, the SPRINT Kick Off meeting was hosted by Institute for Energy Technology, the project coordinator, at its facilities in Lillestrøm, Norway. 🙌 We are proud to have contributed to SPRINT’s funding and to support its implementation. Huge thanks to our dedicated consultants Pierre and Mathilde for driving this effort! 🔗 Follow SPRINT - Horizon Europe on LinkedIn to stay updated on our journey toward a more sustainable energy future! 🌱🔋 #EnergyStorage #Sustainability #SodiumIonBatteries #BatteryInnovation #ClimateTransition
