Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators—especially when we make space for them to lead. Still glowing from spending the day with our exceptional students! Our district team partnered with Playlab AI to host the Girls in Tech Build-A-Thon—a powerful celebration of Women’s History Month and a meaningful step toward building equity in tech. Hosted at Teach For America New York, the event brought together 40 young women from Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx for a day of hands-on learning, creativity, and connection. Students explored AI, design thinking, and real-world problem-solving while building apps and tools that reflected their values, vision, and voice. Some of the day’s highlights: A Poster Walk + Design Sprint tackling big questions around equity, education, and the environment Collaborative ideation through storyboarding and team problem-solving Live demos + hands-on AI building using Playlab.ai’s creative tools Lunch and networking with district leaders, mentors, and volunteers Peer beta-testing before the final pitch A closing showcase, where students presented their AI-powered solutions to a packed room The ideas they brought to life were inspiring—tools designed to promote mental health, financial literacy, academic support, and social change. This event is a clear reflection of what we stand for in our district: Preparing students to be AI-literate and future-ready Using technology to advance equity and opportunity Centering student voice, agency, and leadership Grateful to our partners and champions who made this possible: Jazlyn Mena & Yohanna Hailegebriel – Digital Learning & Innovation Sybil Schloss – My Brother’s Keeper / My Sister’s Keeper George O. Patterson – My Brother’s Keeper NYC The amazing Playlab AI team – Wyman Khuu, Yusuf Ahmad, Marie Denise Sulit, Ethan Castro Our college advisors and mentors – Rhullyan Dharma, Felix Ramos Most of all, we thank the students who showed us what the future of tech looks like: bold, brilliant, and deeply committed to making a difference.

How might we shape AI tools to bring more play into our lives? Since the AI boom I've been thinking a lot about how AI can spark more playful moments and playful learning in different contexts. A lot of AI tools are replicating traditional pedagogies, still very focused on content knowledge and getting to the “right answer.” And, people of all ages can benefit from more play and exploration in their lives, as so much of our playful mindset gets stamped out of us once we enter school. To explore this question I've been experimenting with creating playful micro-apps on Playlab AI. They are meant to be generative, to spark new ideas with weird and whimsical prompts, and to create connections between people IRL. And I thought I would start sharing them here! Please try this one out, let me know how it feels, and share your thoughts on the affordances of AI for play! Try Feats of Funny: https://lnkd.in/ebs8N2Jh #ai #playfullearning #experiencedesign

I had fun talking with Jennifer Wolff and George Cusack about how I'm approaching AI and some of the steps on my learning journey -- from a philosophy course I took as an undergraduate at Smith College to the Playlab AI professional learning community I participated in this fall. I encourage you to check out all the episodes of the Year of Curiosity podcast to hear about the variety of ways that Carleton folks are thinking about AI.

I love this example of Playlab AI’s impact on education in challenging environments: Emmanuel Kimuli, lead teacher at Uganda’s largest refugee school, uses Playlab daily to create AI tools. These empower his staff to deliver concrete learning experiences for South Sudanese and Congolese refugee students. I am proud to be part of a team that puts transformative technology directly into the hands of people who can best leverage it to open doors and create opportunities for those who need it most. If you are also excited about building tech for good, we are hiring! https://lnkd.in/gCa5c6Bs

Open source AI tools offer new possibilities for how we teach and learn, but new learning for educators will be key to effective and student-centered adoption. According to a survey by Educators for Excellence, only 14% of teachers currently feel confident with AI, while 58% are looking for more training, particularly in lesson planning and differentiated instruction. Our recent AI Design Sprint with Playlab AI brought together more than 100 educators, students, district leaders, peer organizations, and philanthropic support organizations to explore how AI can reinforce and elevate the uniquely human aspects of teaching.
