Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators—especially when we make space for them to lead. Still glowing from spending the day with our exceptional students! Our district team partnered with Playlab AI to host the Girls in Tech Build-A-Thon—a powerful celebration of Women’s History Month and a meaningful step toward building equity in tech. Hosted at Teach For America New York, the event brought together 40 young women from Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx for a day of hands-on learning, creativity, and connection. Students explored AI, design thinking, and real-world problem-solving while building apps and tools that reflected their values, vision, and voice. Some of the day’s highlights: A Poster Walk + Design Sprint tackling big questions around equity, education, and the environment Collaborative ideation through storyboarding and team problem-solving Live demos + hands-on AI building using Playlab.ai’s creative tools Lunch and networking with district leaders, mentors, and volunteers Peer beta-testing before the final pitch A closing showcase, where students presented their AI-powered solutions to a packed room The ideas they brought to life were inspiring—tools designed to promote mental health, financial literacy, academic support, and social change. This event is a clear reflection of what we stand for in our district: Preparing students to be AI-literate and future-ready Using technology to advance equity and opportunity Centering student voice, agency, and leadership Grateful to our partners and champions who made this possible: Jazlyn Mena & Yohanna Hailegebriel – Digital Learning & Innovation Sybil Schloss – My Brother’s Keeper / My Sister’s Keeper George O. Patterson – My Brother’s Keeper NYC The amazing Playlab AI team – Wyman Khuu, Yusuf Ahmad, Marie Denise Sulit, Ethan Castro Our college advisors and mentors – Rhullyan Dharma, Felix Ramos Most of all, we thank the students who showed us what the future of tech looks like: bold, brilliant, and deeply committed to making a difference.
