  • Featured this week in World-Architects.com | PSA Publishers Ltd. we’re revisiting the Herman Miller National Design Center. Herman Miller’s flagship showroom was located in the Merchandise Mart, marking the first of many collaborations with Herman Miller—expanding to six other cities, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New York, bringing together Herman Miller, Knoll, and their collective of brands under one roof for the first time. The showroom envelope remained intact for over 25 years, supporting a flexible yet unified space, reflective of a new era of workplace culture while honoring each brand’s legacy. • KSP Partner, Juan Villafane, will lead a tour of International Square for District Architecture Center's Building of the Day on April 21st at 1:00 pm. Located in downtown Washington, D.C., International Square radically reinvents a 1980s atrium lobby into an open-air extension of the street. Previously enclosed and inaccessible, the space now serves as a vibrant public destination drawing people in with large, operable glass doors that open to the street. This intervention reconnects the building to its urban context, welcoming foot traffic and activating the plaza with a renewed sense of openness and transparency. At its heart, The Square is a curated mix of 16 food stalls that support local vendors and form a vibrant culinary hub beneath the 12-story glass atrium. No doubt, International Square is poised to please attendees of the AIA Building of The Day Tour. Reserve your spot via District Architecture Center: https://lnkd.in/gKBHFWnh

The piece highlights the building's transformation into a leading example of achieving carbon-free benchmarks on constrained budgets. Gabriel Wilcox, Director of Sustainable Design at KSP, emphasizes the project's broader implications, stating that it is intended to "serve as a model for decarbonizing the entire GSA portfolio." • Juan Villafane (GSD '00) and KSP hosted a happy hour for Harvard University Graduate School of Design's Urban Design and Real Estate students during their visit to Chicago for their studio project. The studio, HOPE, CHANGE & EQUITY: The Obama Presidential Center and Redevelopment of the Woodlawn Neighborhood, is led by Maurice Cox, former Chicago Planning Commissioner. We were excited to host the cohort and see so many local alumni come together for a lively and engaging conversation on the future of urban design in Chicago.
