From groundbreaking to completion, this project is a game-changer for students and the community. THE BACKSTORY | 👷 The AIR Center construction, phase one of the College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Trades facility in Fond du Lac, was the first visible sign of the College's 2022 referendum project. In total, taxpayers approved a $55 million four-project referendum to enhance Moraine Park facilities district-wide. PHASE 1 | 🦾 The new construction of the AIR Center included 18,000 SF of educational spaces, including various high-tech labs that offer students hands-on experience with the latest industry tools and technologies.    Highlights include: • Robotics Lab: Students program, operate, and build robots, preparing them for the automation sector. • Mechatronics Lab: This unique space combines mechanics, electronics, and software, equipping students for complex automation systems. • 3D Printing Lab: Students bring ideas to life with the latest 3D printing technology, fostering innovation and creativity. • CNC Lab: Students use computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, preparing them for highly skilled careers in manufacturing.     PHASE 2 | 🧑🏭 The renovation of the current 30,000 SF B-Wing manufacturing facility included upgrading and re-allocating the Industrial Maintenance Lab, Welding and Metal Fabrication Labs, Transmission Lab, and Electrical/Autos Lab. The space also included remodeled classrooms, breakout study areas, and small focus rooms. Construction wrapped in 2024, with C.D. • 📣👏 Moraine Park Technical College is tackling local workforce shortages head-on with the Automation, Innovation, and Robotics (AIR) Center! The newly constructed AIR Center is transforming education and providing students with training and skills for impact beyond college. 🚀 WHY THE AIR CENTER MATTERS: • Enhanced Spaces for Instruction: Learn software, programming, product design, manufacturing, and robotics. • Workforce-Ready: Access industry-standard equipment and training for seamless career transitions. • College Credits: Earn college credits in high school to open doors to further education. 🤝 THE POWER OF COMMUNITY with Bonnie Baerwald “The AIR Center project reflects the power of collaborative community efforts. As I met with local businesses, it was clear they needed their workers to be trained in robotics and automation. College leadership came up with a plan, and 32 community partners stepped forward to offer $2.7 million to support our efforts. I am humbled and proud to be part of such a generous and supportive community–one that believes in the power of technical education and collaborative workforce solutions. In January 2024, we proudly welcomed the first class of students to the new AIR Center facility–one we know will create skilled workers for years to come.” -Bonnie Baerwald, MPA, CPA, President, Moraine Park Technical College 🌟 A CATALYST FOR MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE: The AIR Center has positioned MPTC at the forefront of manufacturing education, attracting top talent and fostering innovation. Local businesses need skilled employees, and Moraine Park is stepping up to bridge that gap! • Did you know that gender-diverse companies are 25% more likely to achieve above-average profitability?👇 This March, we celebrated Women's History Month and Women in Construction Week by highlighting the incredible contributions of women in our industry, both past and present. We recognized the unique talents and perspectives that bring value to projects and teams. As Holly Brenner, SVP at C.D. Smith, aptly puts it, "Diversity isn't just an ideal—it's a competitive🏅advantage." 🤩 A LEGACY OF PIONEERS • Elizabeth Wilbraham (1632): One of the first women architects, drawing her own designs. • Emily Roebling (1872): Supervised the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill. • Julia Morgan (1898): Graduated with a degree in civil engineering and became an architect and construction supervisor for Hearst Castle. • Elsie Eaves (1927): Project manager, pioneering data collection and tracking spending trends on construction projects. These stories aren't just historical highlights. They're a reminder of the talent and dedication needed to drive our industry forward, and we continue to build upon their efforts. 🌟 BUILDING ON A FOUNDATION OF EXCELLENCE Today, women make up nearly half of the national workforce, yet only 11% are represented in construction. While the number of women in construction is increasing, they remain underrepresented, particularly in field careers. This isn't simply about numbers. Every voice matters, and a team with varied backgrounds and experiences brings unique perspectives and problem-solving skills for tackling modern construction challenges. 💪 EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS We are committed to empowering the next generation of construction leaders. Through youth apprenticeship programs and hands-on learning, we provide invaluable opportunities for young individuals to develop their skills and explore their passions. These programs offer a direct path to a fulfilling career in the trades, ensuring that a legacy of building excellence continues. 👷♀️ DIVERSE ROLES AND CONTRIBUTIONS Women are making significant strides in both field and professional roles. From working on jobsites to managing projects and mentoring young talent, their contributions are helping to shape a more inclusive and innovative industry. Teams that embrace diversity are more likely to achieve above-average profitability due to the varied perspectives and problem-solving skills they bring. 🚀 LOOKING FORWARD: A FUTURE OF EXCELLENCE Our vision is to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to contribute their unique talents. We're committed to excellence, integrity, and the power of diverse perspectives. Together, we create an environment that promotes a culture of growth, collaboration, and innovation for a future of construction excellence filled with endless possibilities. #WomenInConstruction #DiversityInConstruction #Construction #CDSmith #WisconsinConstruction #YouthApprenticeship #constructioncareers

  • What if we told you that friendly competition can fuel real change in our communities? Here's how we know: 👇 👷♀️💪 Building Stronger Communities Through Giving Back At C.D. Smith, employees thrive on good old-fashioned departmental competition, effortlessly turning friendly rivalry into support for local charities. 🧺 Easter Basket Raffle: A Creative Way to Give Every spring, departments are invited to assemble themed baskets for the Easter Basket Raffle, showcasing their creativity with offerings ranging from sports gear, games, food and beverages, and exciting event experiences. The creativity is always on point! 🤝 Turning Rivalry into Real Impacts The best part? All proceeds go straight to charity, with the department whose basket gets the most submissions earning the privilege of selecting local non-profit organizations to receive the funds. Last year, an impressive $2,230 was raised, with the Project Management team selecting the proceeds to benefit Fondy Food Pantry and HOLYLAND FOOD PANTRY. 💬 A Culture of Giving Back "This initiative is just one example of how C.D. Smith contributes to the communities where we live, work, and play. Giving back is ingrained in our culture. Both as a company and as individual employees, we embrace it wholeheartedly." -Connie Coon, Vice President of Human Resources, C.D. • 👢😁👷♀️ What if outdated perceptions and ill-fitting gear were no longer obstacles for women in demanding industries? On Thursday, March 13th, 2025, Marian University and C.D. Smith Construction hosted a Women in Construction 2025 event, empowering young women to challenge the old status quo and explore construction careers. While women have made significant strides in the past decade, they still represent a minority. The event brought together industry professionals, educators, and students to support, discuss, and celebrate women's changing roles and the future of the skilled trades. The half-day program featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities designed to inspire, inform, and create new opportunities. ✨ KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Innovative Solutions for Age-Old Problems Keynote speaker Ana Kraft, Founder and CEO of Xena Workwear, shared her journey from project engineer to entrepreneur. Frustrated by the lack of properly fitting footwear and safety gear for women, Ana launched Xena Workwear in 2019 to bridge the gap. Her story of risk and success provided passion for a greater purpose: with confidence and the right tools, women are empowered to excel in STEM and the trades. 🎤 PANEL DISCUSSION: Diverse Voices, Shared Experiences A diverse panel of professionals, including project managers, engineers, and current students, shared their experiences and insights. Molly Nemcek, a Project Manager at C.D. Smith Construction, discussed the challenges and rewards of managing large-scale projects. Current students like Payton Beaty from Marian University's Construction Management Program and Alaynah Pierce from Fond du Lac High School's ACE Academy provided perspectives on entering the field and the opportunities they see for their futures. Their stories highlighted the evolving roles of women in the industry and the importance of mentorship and support. 🚀 INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION: Paving the Way The event showcased current achievements that help pave the way for future leaders. Attendees had the opportunity to network with professionals, learn about opportunities, and discuss new technologies in the field. Events like Women in Construction 2025 continue to break down barriers and create new opportunities for success by sharing real-life stories and providing a platform to connect and learn.
