💥 We’re finally able to announce that twig is the recipient of a hotly-contested #SmartGrant from Innovate UK! Competition for this award was extremely tough, with 2,134 applicants and only 44 funded, so we’re very pleased to have been successful. 🧴 Our ~£500,000 project is focused on taking our first ingredient to market, which is set to transform sustainability and performance vs. incumbent ingredients. It’s a novel, active ingredient used in beauty and cosmetics products that we know consumers will love. Watch this space and we’ll reveal all soon! 🤝 Our list of commercial partners are excited to get their hands on it, and this grant will help us produce development samples in the UK with scale-up experts, CPI. If you’re interested in developing novel and/or sustainable ingredients for your products then get in touch! info@twig.bio #bioengineerbetter #fermentation #grant #bioproducts Satnam Surae, PhD | James Allen | Russ Tucker | Christina Brown Jonathan Kennedy | Reece Whitfield
About us
twig is a bioengineering company using AI to create sustainable ingredients that don’t cost the earth. We’re on a mission to drive a global transition away from unsustainably resourced ingredients to bio-fermented ingredients in a way that benefits everyone – people, producers, and the planet. We’re using AI to radically improve the speed and efficacy of lab-based bioengineering, creating affordable, scalable, and dependable ingredients that producers can use in the everyday items the world relies on – without compromise. We like to call this ‘bioengineering better’. A game-changing, AI-defined approach to bioengineering in which the tech drives the direction of the science. This means no gut instincts, preconceptions, or the pressure to meet short-term service contracts - which have plagued the bioengineering industry for decades - just rapid, incisive data analysis to signpost the best answers to some of the planet’s most pressing sustainability problems.

I have been looking after the twig branch managers (Stick Insects 🐜) for about 6 months. Here is what I have learnt and how it relates to science: 1️⃣ Embrace the failures. Sometimes things go wrong and that is ok! We had some challenges with our branch manager populations falling in the winter, however, we learnt from it and the population has doubled in the past month! Science is hard and I often learn more from failures than successes. 📈 2️⃣ Don't be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes there are a lot of stick insects or brambles to handle, just as there are new and complicated experiments. 🙋♂️ 3️⃣ Look for innovations. Spraying water and a bag of eggs massively improved survival of the stick insects. We have many top secret lab innovations too 🤫 4️⃣ Patience is key. 🕰️ It takes about 6 weeks for a stick insect egg to hatch, science can take a bit longer than that... 5️⃣ Hit the literature. It turns out learning about how to look after stick insects is useful! I was once told that you can often make more progress by spending an hour in the library than an hour in the lab. 📖

Our Co-Founder and CTO Satnam Surae, PhD is heading to London Lab Live in May to chat about #labsofthefuture with Andrew King and Allison Hunter At twig our scientists like to automate things as much as possible, using our software platform Grow:Bot to design, plan and run our experiments. It means all of our data is generated in exactly the same way, making it ML-ready. It also means our #twiglets can enjoy a nice cup of tea in the office rather than being stuck in the lab! To hear more about our #AI-defined and #automation philosophies, grab your ticket below and head to the ExCeL in May! See you there!
Here's an exciting panel at London Lab Live! Panel: Labs of the future; harmonizing sustainability, efficiency, automation and GMP requirement. What should we prioritize to create labs that are efficient, compliant, and future-ready? Let’s talk about resource alignment, automation, and reducing emissions. Our panelists: 🎤Andrew King, Senior Director HSE, Sustainability & Quality Control IT Systems, AstraZeneca 🎤Satnam Surae, PhD, CSO, twig 🎤Allison Hunter, Technical Operations Manager, Imperial College London 📑Remember that you can view our agenda now online!https://buff.ly/3QgJWcI Eager to speak? Great day at the BBIA inaugural Demeter awards, showcasing the strength of #biobased #innovation in the UK. So much to be excited about! Part of the day included a panel looking ahead to #2030, which I joined alongside Mark Corbett, Isabel Webb, Sara Holland and Paul Mines. We covered everything from #regulation to #infrastructure, and how the UK needs to seize the opportunity in front of us. Big thanks to Dr Jen Vanderhoven for organising an exceptional day. Already looking forward to the next one! twig

At twig HQ we hosted Sadia Nowshin from Sifted, telling our story of how we ended up working with Co-Laboratories to convert a London laundrette into a lab, right next to a fishmongers! 👕 🔬 🐟 Some of the best science happens in the strangest places! Check out the full article below! 👇
Scientific founders across Europe are still facing a shortage of affordable lab space — particularly in the UK's major hubs. But some are taking matters into their own hands. Adam Glen, PhD, cofounder of Unicorn Biotechnologies, converted a former nightclub in Sheffield into a bespoke office space — and reckons more people should be willing to think creatively around the problem. “We seem to do this thing in the UK where we wait for somebody else to take the initiative, and I don't understand that,” he says. “People just need to take action; they don’t get things done. [Founders complain] there’s no lab space – go and build some then!” I spoke to him — and Russ Tucker, whose lab space at twig was once a laundrette and currently sits next door to a particularly pungent fish processing centre (with the aircon to filter the smell, thankfully) — about the ups and downs of converting your own lab, and to Laura Grimwood of Co-Laboratories on why more real estate developers aren't jumping at the opportunity. More here: https://lnkd.in/e2Fp_rDb I could only find examples of such conversions within the UK — is this a practice sweeping across the rest of Europe yet or is the mainland yet to give it a go? Let me know!
