Magical Mushroom Company® are delighted to unveil our latest project “Inner Currents” at ARC West London, which is sited on the historic site of the Manbré and Garton Saccharine Works, established in 1876. The founder, Alex Manbre, initially came to England to scale up his innovative method for producing sugar from potato starch. The factory operated until its acquisition by Tate and Lyle. Today, ARC, established by Brookfield in 2022, is revitalising this significant location to enhance West London’s science and innovation ecosystem. Commissioned by Daniel Pagella at ARC | Advanced Research Clusters “Inner Currents” represents a pioneering integration of sustainable innovation and artistic vision. Imagined by ARC Group and brought to life through collaboration with MMC’s Designer Ryan Little and Carpenter Chris Marshall alongside ASM Ltd, the sculpture demonstrates the harmonious fusion of sustainability, art, and advanced fabrication methods. “Inner Currents” was crafted using sustainable mycelium composite material grown by MMC, combined with responsibly sourced timber for the inner structure. This innovative method utilised CNC Engineering, 3D Printing and precision carpentry, resulting in a lightweight, durable, and natural structure. The vibrant pink finish, achieved using water-based paint and a protective non-toxic coating, accentuates its dynamic curves and ensures durability, aligning perfectly with ARC’s sustainability principles. The sculpture stands as a testament to the possibilities of eco-conscious materials in architecture and design, challenging traditional approaches by demonstrating the aesthetic and structural potential of sustainable alternatives. “Inner Currents” invites viewers to rethink the use of sustainable materials and sets a new benchmark for sustainable art. A Defining Moment for Magical Mushroom Company® We are entering a pivotal new chapter at MMC®. This month, we begin transitioning from our trusted Esher and Attenborough facilities to the latest state-of-the-art Beeston factory, redefining sustainable, industrial-scale packaging, which we can replicate in other locations. After five years of operations, Esher (Mushroom 1), our pilot facility with a capacity of 1.5M parts annually, has been decommissioned and will officially close this December. Our Attenborough factory (Mushroom 2), which could produce 2.1M parts per year, will conclude operations in mid-January. Taking their place is Beeston, a world-class factory that begins production in January. This factory is unique in that it will produce raw materials and manufacture the packaging from these raw materials in the same facility, and by July 2025, it will reach a staggering 15 million parts annually, a six-fold increase in capacity. Alongside Beeston, our Sofia factory in Bulgaria, Mushroom 3 - which has a similar capacity, is rapidly scaling up, with utilisation growing fast as we meet increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. We also have a new R&D and prototyping facility in Addlestone, Surrey, to add to the estate. Redefining Sustainability Beeston and Sofia exemplify our mission to eliminate polystyrene by offering scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective alternatives. Combining in-house raw material production and cutting-edge manufacturing, these facilities deliver Mushroom® Packaging at a price comparable to polystyrene. We’re excited to announce that Magical Mushroom Company® has teamed up with DARE (LVMH’s global intrapreneurship program) and Stella McCartney to create custom-grown display plinths and iPad holder’s made from our Mushroom® Packaging for the Fungi Forms exhibition at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. These plinths will beautifully display Stella McCartney’s mycelium bags, highlighting the growing role of mycelium in sustainable luxury. Our packaging and materials are crafted from binding mycelium and responsibly sourced hemp, not only offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials but also actively reduces carbon emissions. Hemp is a natural CO2 sequester, absorbing biogenic carbon and supporting the natural carbon cycle from growth through to disposal. This collaboration showcases how sustainability and luxury can go hand in hand.
