About us
The Workboat Association is the trade, skills and safety standards association for the workboat industry. Since its inception in 1994, the association has acted as a crucial point of liaison between its membership and key regulatory and industry bodies, such as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and international Port States. It has also driven the creation of safety, technical and best practice standards, provided a unifying platform for industry lobbying and debate, and delivered industry-recognised training and certification opportunities. Core achievements include the introduction and subsequent revision of the MCA Code of Practice for the Safe Operation of Small Workboats – the “Workboat Code” and, the formation and development of the multi-national Maritime Apprenticeship Schemes - with syllabuses in process covering all duties on board commercial vessels under 500GT. The Workboat Association has a membership base of over 200 UK and European workboat owners, operators, stakeholders and professionals, collectively representing around 1500 operational vessels and approximately 6000 direct personnel. Supporting you to start your first day within the industry, to operating a successful global fleet of vessels.

The 2025 Edition of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP) has now been published. A comprehensive set of guidelines designed to ensure the health and safety of seafarers on merchant vessels, COSWP provides practical guidance on safe working practices and procedures to be followed on board ships to minimise risks and prevent accidents. Key updates include chapters on shipyard safety, standards for means of access, and safe movement on board ships during extreme weather conditions. It is a statutory requirement for the current edition of the code to be carried on board all UK ships, other than fishing vessels and pleasure craft. The code contains essential health and safety information, and it must be made available to any seafarer on board the ship who requests it. The Maritime Minister has revealed the Government’s new goals for all vessels that operate in UK waters and dock at UK ports to be carbon free and help vessel owners, operators and scientists make emission-free voyages a reality. Part of the Government’s Plan for Change to propel the UK towards becoming a green energy superpower and drive growth, the new Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy sets out goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, 80% by 2040 and to zero by 2050. This will see the UK match the highest level of the ambitious goals agreed at the International Maritime Organization in their 2023 Strategy on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emission from Ships.
