'Traditional approaches to controlling dynamic behaviour often relied on adding mass or stiffness – typically achieved by increasing structural sizes. However, it is now well recognised that the integration of supplementary damping systems often results in more efficient and less carbon-intensive solutions.' This article explores the various benefits that can be obtained by incorporating a supplementary damping system to reduce footfall, wind and seismic vibration, and dynamic structural response. Written by members of the Institution's Seismic and Dynamic Events Panel, it discusses the merits of integrating damping mechanisms into a design, underscoring their potential influence on efficient, resilient designs and contribution towards the aim of a net-zero built environment. IStructE will be holding a series of six lunchtime webinars over the next few months exploring different aspects of the #BuildingSafetyAct and its impact on the wider industry. This series has been arranged by the South East Regional Group In the first of these, hosted on 8 April 2025, Patrick Hayes, Technical Director at The Institution of Structural Engineers, will break down the structure of the Act and help attendees to understand how it affects existing legislation, such as the Building Act, Building Regulations, and the way buildings are designed and constructed in the UK moving forward. Future sessions will explore competencies, the Golden Thread, structural risk assessments, the Gateway process, and legal considerations. The Institution of Structural Engineers reposted this
Lots of people have asked me what The Future of Structural Design is About? So every day this week I would like to highlight a different part of the book. Starting today with Part 1. Part 1 provides the framing for the rest of the book. It contains a very brief introduction and history of probabilistic design (the how of the future of design) with Raffaele De Risi and also provides a chapter on ethics, which is both the why of the book, but also provides thoughtful tools for understanding our agency, and the role we can play in a much larger and complex system. I am hugely grateful to Dr Alix Dietzel for her input into this chapter, and I have often used her models as I wrestle with questions around ethics and the role of the structural engineer. Part 1 also outlines how this book ties in with the bigger conversations going on at The Institution of Structural Engineers and how it relates to design for zero, reuse, and regenerative design. You can get the book here: https://lnkd.in/e74nQacs Or even better, get the climate emergency five-volume package here which brings all the key publications together in one place: https://lnkd.in/e7UW9eqJ
