The winner of the IStructE South Eastern Structural Awards 2024 Office Building category is No.1 Liverpool Street by Mott MacDonald The project redevelops One Liverpool Street, integrating major infrastructure works for the Crossrail project. It features a 240,000 sq. ft. office building, providing high-quality office space in the financial district through innovative structural engineering. The main challenge was to create a robust structural solution that respects the site's complex infrastructure, including the Crossrail ventilation shaft, ventilation and running tunnels, London Underground rail, post office tunnels, and the Queen Victoria Tunnel. A building with a 10m basement, only 2 metres from operational live tracks. Innovative structural solutions enabled a 10-storey building, replacing the previously planned 5-7 storey structure, and increased the GIA threefold by bridging over the LUL.

Join us for the IStructE South Eastern AGM followed by talk on Walking on eggshells: reuse of a historic thin shell roof at Smithfield Poultry Market by Guusje Ubachs and Chris Noble (ARUP) on Tuesday 26 November 2024 18:30-19:30 at London South Bank University (LSBU), LSBU Hub, Vauxhall Lecture Theatre, 100 London Rd, Elephant and Castle, London SE1 6NJ Registration link: https://lnkd.in/eYv2AGZS After the AGM the talk will describe the pioneering original design and construction of the 1960s historic concrete shell structure of the Smithfield Poultry Market Roof in London, and the sophisticated and innovative method used to breathe new life into this unique structure. This method combines a first order reliability approach with an advanced digital workflow that enabled a detailed technical analysis of the as-built structure. This method demonstrated the structure can meet the modern-day performance requirements without the need for any strengthening works – the most sustainable outcome which allows this beautiful structure to continue its legacy.
