Join us on Wednesday 26th March (13:00-14:00) for our second Lunchtime Lecture of 2025 entitled REBLADE: Re-blading of Irish wind turbines using novel technologies 🍃 ⚡ (Link below!) As the world moves towards a more sustainable way of life, Ireland must invest significantly in creating a carbon-free energy system. Currently, the largest source of renewable energy globally is wind and Ireland has an installed capacity of wind energy of 4,137MW, where 17% of wind turbines will reach their end-of-life by 2030. If solutions to extend turbine life are not found, 700MW of capacity will be decommissioned. To this end, the REBLADE project aims to develop advanced technologies to retrofit ageing turbines through re-blading with new highly efficient and resilient blades. It extends the working life of the turbines while reducing their weight and increasing their efficiency and power production. To achieve this, the project design, manufacture, and mechanically test the new wind blades, which are suitable for installation in Irish wind farms to extend the life of the turbine. This extensive research programme will demonstrate the performance of the novel wind blade technology developed, which will be performed by a collaboration between blade manufacturer, ÉireComposites Teo , and design/testing facility, University of Galway Speaker Bio: Dr. Yadong Jiang is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at University of Galway. His area of expertise is in advanced solutions for renewable energy conversion devices. He is has secured over €1 million in funding from various sources, including SEAI and SFI, to accelerate the development of composite wind/tidal turbine blades. Dear all: We have not one, but two, Lunchtime Lectures this month and to kickstart our busy year ahead! Our first Lunchtime Lecture will be held next week Wednesday March 5th from 13:00-14:00 and is titled: Scottish National Gallery - Extension and Refurbishment (South Portico Temporary Works). Eventbrite details are linked below for those who wish to attend. This technical talk will outline the complex temporary works design required to form a link tunnel underneath William Henry Playfair’s iconic Palladian façade as part of the £38M refurbishment and basement extension works that opened in late 2023. Speaker, Ben McIlroy, led the temporary works design throughout the project and will discuss how Arup worked with Tilbury Douglas to design and deliver a scheme to temporarily support part of the South façade of the 1860’s building, to allow a 6m deep excavation to be made into the mound beneath so that a permanent link tunnel could be constructed. In this regard, a combination of unpredictable ground conditions and a listed façade structure resulted in a uniquely challenging project. The temporary works design won a prize at the regional Scottish IStructE awards and Ben was jointly awarded the IStructE’s Sir Arnold Waters medal for a presentation he gave on the topic at the Gallery itself. Speaker Details: Ben McIlroy (MEng CEng MICE MIStructE) is a Senior Structural Engineer in Arup’s Belfast office having previously spent eight years working in Arup’s Edinburgh Office. https://lnkd.in/eTqx2JuH Engineers Ireland The Institution of Structural Engineers IStructE NII IStructE Northern Ireland Regional Group

Some things are bigger than engineering, and we apologise for sharing such sad news today… Some of you may be aware, but for those who aren’t, it is with deep sadness that we share the news of Maria Eftimova EngTech MICE tragic passing following an accident while scrambling. Maria was an ambitious, bright, and cherished 28-year-old whose vibrant personality, energy, and presence uplifted all those around her. A talented civil engineer who graduated from Salford, Maria also chaired the ICE Manchester committee. She won numerous awards at a young age for her exceptional engineering ability and her contributions to the community. Her family, who reside in Bulgaria, now face a significant financial burden to repatriate Maria and give her the dignified farewell she deserves. If anyone would like to contribute, even the smallest amount, it would be greatly appreciated. The link to donate can be found below. https://lnkd.in/d6JGKf48

Tonight——-Dursey Island Cable Car Refurbishment Project - Engineers Ireland/IStructE Joint Evening Lecture - All Welcome. 7pm Wednesday February 26th at Rochestown Park Hotel Cork (tea/coffee from 6.30pm). Register for the webcast at https://lnkd.in/e4yzsTAm . The Dursey Island Cable Car was originally opened on December 5th 1969 and is located on the Beara Peninsula, West Cork, linking the mainland with the scenic inhabited Dursey Island. It is Ireland’s only cable car service, and the only cable car in Europe that crosses open seawater. Operated and managed by Cork County Council, a structural assessment of the Dursey Island Cable Car in 2016 revealed that the support towers would reach the end of their operational life in the early 2020s. Roughan O’Donovan Consulting Engineers and contractor TLI Group were appointed to oversee the project, which involved the full replacement of the 24m tower structures and the island anchor frame. The system was shut on 31st March 2022 and reopened 9th June 2023. This lecture will cover all aspects of the engineering and construction of the cable car upgrade works. Speakers: Tim O’Herlihy (Cork County Council), Tony Dempsey (ROD), Inês Roque Domingues (ROD), Ruairí Geary (TLI Group) Engineers Ireland - Cork Region IStructE NII Engineers Ireland IStructE Headquarters Cork County Council Roughan & O'Donovan TLI Group Jim Leahy Please repost to your network - it would be great to get a good old-fashioned audience in the room as well as online. It promises to be a great lecture.
