Today our tunnel boring machine (TBM) Caroline, completed a 5-mile tunnel drive under London, reaching the Green Park Way vent shaft in Ealing. The machine is 1 of 4 giant tunnelling machines being deployed to build the railway’s Northolt Tunnel. The 2,050-tonne TBM broke through into an underground reception can filled with foam concrete, and installed the 4,217th concrete tunnel ring to complete the 5-mile stretch of tunnel. Fantastic to see that TBM Caroline has reached the Green Park Way vent Shaft in Ealing, completing its 5 mile tunnel drive! The 2,500 tonne tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through into an underground reception filled with foam concrete, and installed the 4,217th concrete tunnel ring to complete the western section of the Northolt Tunnel for HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd. Major congratulations to the team on the Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture for completing the second TBM breakthrough for the Northolt Tunnel under London, which will eventually take the railway from Old Oak Common station into Euston. Great to see TBM Sushila was successfully lifted out of the ground at at Green Park Way (Greenford) on Saturday evening! TBM Sushila, one of four TBM's constructing the Northolt Tunnel for HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, was launched with TBM Caroline in October 2022, and excavated over 1.2 mllion tonnes of earth and installed 4,217 tunnel rings before finishing her 5-mile journey in December. A big congratulations goes to the team on Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture for their amazing work to lift the 850 tonne cutterhead, front and middle shield using a 750-tonne gantry crane. This operation took over a year of planning and was coordinated with Network Rail, while the gantry crane itself was supplied by Mammoet. All 4 TBMs building the 8.4 mile long Northolt tunnel - Sushila and Caroline from West Ruislip and Emily and Anne from the Victoria Crossover Box close to Old Oak Common towards Green Park Way - will also be lifted out using the giant gantry crane. #strabag #workonprogress #constructionworldwide #HS2
