Steel is a critical part of our world. Over 6 million people 👷 work in the steel industry worldwide and it contributes around 3.8% to global GDP 💰 . But it also comes with significant environmental 🌳 and social 👥 impacts. That's why we're working to drive the socially and environmentally responsible production of net-zero steel. And with the support of our members and partners, we developed the ResponsibleSteel International Production Standard. So how does it work? Check out our latest video explainer to learn more ⬇️ #steel #sustainability #netzero #ResponsibleSteel

Decarbonising steel is complex, but standards can cut through the uncertainty. At the 3rd European Green Steel Summit 2025 in Düsseldorf last week, ResponsibleSteel™ CEO Annie Heaton shared three powerful insights on how standards can drive alignment, enable interoperability, and ensure a socially responsible transition: ✅ Find alignment and build agreement – In a world of uncertainty, there is more agreement than disagreement on decarbonisation. Standards can provide stability and a shared foundation. ✅ Interoperability is key – As nations develop their own policies and frameworks, a common language is essential to support trade and finance and prevent fragmentation. Without it, how can these systems talk to each other? ✅ A socially responsible transition – If policies look inward, protecting only domestic interests, we risk not only carbon leakage but the leakage of social standards. International standards, via policy, trade, and finance, must drive socially positive climate outcomes globally. At ResponsibleSteel, we believe that clear, credible standards that talk to each other, are essential for managing risks and accelerating a just, sustainable transition. No certainty = no investment - which results in more delays to decarbonisation. The risks are too great to delay action. #ResponsibleSteel #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #Interoperability #JustTransition #Standards

Exciting developments for ResponsibleSteel™ this spring! This month, we were delighted to see JSW achieve its first ResponsibleSteel certifications for four sites in India, covering 83% of the company’s national steel production, an important milestone for Indian steel. We also celebrated International Women’s Day by highlighting the women driving change across the steel supply chain. And in recognition of Global Recycling Day, Matthew Wenban-Smith reflected on the history of steel recycling and the valuable lessons it offers in the journey toward responsible near-zero steel. We’re also pleased to welcome three new members to the ResponsibleSteel community, PRCO America Inc., Acciaierie Bertoli Safau SpA, and Yeşilyurt Demir Çelik. In this month’s newsletter, read about: 🆕 JSW's ResponsibleSteel certifications in India 🌍 Key global steel policy updates 🚺 International Women’s Day celebrations ♻️ Global Recycling Day reflections 🎉 New members joining ResponsibleSteel 📖Upcoming training opportunities And more.. At the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) Transform conference in Sydney last week, ResponsibleSteel™’s Alli Devlin joined leaders in the built environment to discuss transformational industrial change. During a panel discussion with GBCA’s CEO, Davina Rooney, and BlueScope’s Head of Future Technologies, Chris Page, Alli emphasised the importance of “big picture” systems thinking to decarbonise steel production. Alongside circular material practices, cleaner ironmaking processes must be prioritised in a world of constrained scrap supply. A major focus of the discussion was the NeoSmelt project, a collaboration between BlueScope, Rio Tinto, and BHP, to develop a direct reduction and smelting process for low-grade Pilbara ores. Given that the Pilbara region produces around 35% of global iron ore annually, commercialising this near-zero emissions compatible ironmaking technology is an imperative to scale-up near-zero emissions steel supply chains. Beyond technology, conversations at the conference highlighted the need for greater market understanding around high-impact steel procurement strategies. How do we bridge the gap between demand for low-carbon steel and its availability? How can organisational procurement strategies align with domestic and global decarbonisation pathways? These are challenges that must be addressed collectively. As the steel industry moves toward ambitious 2030 climate targets, collaboration across supply chains is critical. ResponsibleSteel remains committed to working with industry partners to drive meaningful change towards sustainability across the steel sector. #ResponsibleSteel #SustainableSteel #Decarbonisation #Transform2024 #SteelIndustry #NetZero

Steel recycling ♻️ has come a long way. For centuries, it was about reworking, not re-melting. The development of the first blast furnace 🔥 around a thousand years ago made it possible to turn steel scrap into liquid metal. Fast forward to 1906, and the first Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)⚡ capable of using 100% scrap, was born. To mark Global Recycling Day, Matthew Wenban-Smith, Director of OneWorldStandards, reflects on the history of steel recycling and what it tells us about the transition to a net-zero steel economy. To celebrate International Women’s Day, this week we’re highlighting a few of the women who are driving change across the steel supply chain. In 2022, ArcelorMittal Dofasco committed to doubling the proportion of ♀️ women in leadership positions by 2030, and the following year, launched the Alliance for Women to support the development, advancement, and retention of 👷♀️ women in the workforce. Elle Gatto is an Assistant Team Leader in Finished Product Shipping for ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Her department is the last line of defense - she takes great pride in knowing that her role contributes to ensuring that only the highest-quality steel reaches customers. "Being a woman in the steel industry has its challenges, but also presents unique opportunities for growth and leadership. It's empowering to contribute to an industry that is traditionally male-dominated, proving that diversity leads to 💪 stronger teams and more 💡 creative solutions," Elle comments.
