We kicked off Shell StartUp Engine UK 2025 last week in my home town of #Aberdeen. We’ve just started our FastTrack tour of some key startup hubs around the UK: in-person events that connect energy startups with Shell experts to help them accelerate. These sessions are always intense - but they’re where magic often happens. Put the right founders in front of the right experts and suddenly ideas click, confidence builds and momentum starts to form. Aberdeen, of course, had a strong offshore flavour: wind, marine, hydrogen, energy efficiency. We met PlanSea Solutions Limited, Green H2 Energy, SIMULEX Limited, eCERTO, EAGLE RAY ROBOTICS, Eco Energio, Exergic Energy Ltd and AWC Technology Ltd. Shell engineers from upstream, wind, commercial and decarbonisation joined us at the ONE Tech Hub - asking questions, giving real-world feedback and swapping insights with founders tackling some of the industry’s toughest problems. Then it was down to #Edinburgh, where we met more founders working in energy storage, carbon capture, battery recycling and renewables: Entropyst, Forge Minerals, Energy Mutual, Reoptimize Systems, KELP Systems Ltd, CellMine, Mhor Energy Limited, SIM Energy, CGEn Energy and PEMS Digital Technologies Pvt Ltd. Same fast-paced format. Same energy in the room. And the same lesson: when Shell’s technical and commercial teams meet ambitious founders, both sides learn something and make progress. Reoptimize Systems is raising Seed Investment to roll-out its patented Global Loss Minimization technology in 2025,  which optimises control settings for wind farms without changing hardware or software.  Based in Edinburgh, REOS uses field data and machine learning to enhance turbine performance. Its patented technology has shown: ·        Yield increases: 6% on medium-scale turbines, 2.3% on MW scale turbines ·        Positive revenue impact: ~£500,000 annually for a 100MW wind farm ·        Cost efficiency: No physical intervention needed, preserving asset life REOS is working on pilot-level optimisation projects with global wind energy asset owners, including a large multinational utility. Wind turbine optimisation is a $7 billion per year market opportunity, and that total is increasing as global wind capacity increases year on year. Unlike many of the products on the market, the REOS alleviates load and results in no negative impacts on asset life. To date Reoptimize Systems has received around £1 million in grant, £500,000 of Angel investment and has generated around £250,000 of revenue. That's a wrap on Cleantech Venture Day Amsterdam! 🎉 We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our speakers and panellists from across the day! We opened with two engaging talks from key industry voices: first a keynote from Mark Daly (BloombergNEF), on the future of climate tech, followed by a talk from Sander, van Stiphout (Johan Cruijff ArenA) about cities in transition. After that, our speakers were joined onstage by Chantal Schrijver (European Investment Bank (EIB)), and Sam Goodall (Climate Tech SuperCluster), for a panel discussion on climate tech in a changing Europe, facilitated by Jim Totty (Viridis). From there the day split in two - in the NEMO Science Museum boardroom and theatre we ran the Climate Tech SuperCluster Innovation Forum, and in the main auditorium our wonderful pitching companies presented to a room full of investors and industry leaders, with thought-provoking talks by Catherine Joce CEnv, Oscar Escalante, David Dekker, and Hannah Scott breaking up the sessions. The first Innovation Forum session was a roundtable run in collaboration between Climate Tech SuperCluster and Cambridge Consultants featuring exploration of the role Virtual Power Plants and wider grid flexibility technologies will play in the next phases of grid decarbonisation. Later Innovation Forum sessions, facilitated by ThinkPlace and run in collaboration with Johan Cruijff ArenA, focused on 'city energy partnerships' and 'the future of mobility'. 🚀 Reflections on Cleantech Venture Day Amsterdam 🌍💡 Yesterday’s #CleantechVentureDay in Amsterdam was an inspiring gathering of entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders, all committed to driving innovation in sustainability, mobility, and clean energy. The event was filled with exciting discussions, groundbreaking solutions, and meaningful connections—a true testament to the momentum in the cleantech space! 🏟️ Johan Cruijff Arena: A Living Lab for Sustainability One of the standout presentations was from Sander, van Stiphout the Johan Cruijff Arena, a pioneer in energy innovation and sustainable stadium management. Some incredible highlights from their approach: 🔋 A 9MW battery storage system powered an entire event, proving that large-scale energy storage can be both efficient and reliable. ♻️ The arena’s first energy storage system was built using secondhand Nissan Leaf batteries, a brilliant example of circular economy thinking. 🌍 80% of the stadium’s carbon footprint comes from fan travel, making sustainable mobility a top priority. The arena is working with EIT Urban Mobility and other partners to tackle this challenge head-on. 🚀 Incredible Pitching Sessions: Startups Shaping the Future The startup pitching sessions were among the most impressive moments of the day! Seeing ambitious founders take the stage to pitch their cleantech innovations was truly inspiring.
