🇳🇴 At the end of last year I went to Bergen, Norway to talk about climate action with Tomorrow's Air and Innovation Norway. 🙅♂️If I can be honest, I was hesitant to go. I thought “conferences are all talk no walk”. 😳But I was dead wrong. 🌍Christina Beckmann , Hege Vibeke Barnes , and Shannon Stowell were able to get some of the most amazing, thoughtful human beings in the world into one room. 🌙🛳️Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would meet Gabrielle Walker, let alone share a crazy night in the Norwegian Sea on a Hurtigruten ship with her and the other 50+ best and brightest in climate x travel. (which, by the way, we got a preview of Hurtigruten’s all electric cruise ship from their COO and kind human, Gerry, and it was siiiiiick🤯). 🪄And what came out was beautiful. 🌊A deeper understanding of how travel is an undercurrent that can make massive waves of change. 🧬Travel connects cultures and ideas and creates community. But importantly it also connects almost every aspect of our climate challenge. 🏔️🌱✈️🏗️From climate chaos like melting glaciers and loss of biodiversity to hard to decarbonize industries like air travel, to major sectoral GHG contributors like real estate, to solutions spaces like circularity, sustainable fuels, and CDR, travel kinda has it all in this messy non linear way. 💡And for me, it’s really interesting to think about climate through this lens. Because climate is an inherently complex thing. It’s all the things in fact. And as it turns out, travel is too. 🥅➕It reminds me of a recent post that sustainability thought leader and author of Net Positive, Andrew Winston (co auth Paul Polman) did where he said: 🎤“After 25 years in this space, I believe that the biggest hurdle to building a more sustainable world is a story. We've been told to maximize profits and wealth above all. In this world view, there's no room for a humane approach to business, or an understanding that we're all connected.” 🌌💚This is travel. It creates an understanding that we’re all connected.
