We were thrilled to participate in the second annual Global Direct Air Capture Conference at New York University, hosted by the Direct Air Capture Coalition, Breakthrough Energy , Good Energy Collective, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and RMI. UFL at NYU Tandon School of Engineering Program Manager, Jessica Gross, joined a distinguished group of experts from across policy, finance, technology, and industry to explore the future of #directaircapture. The conference served as a vital space for sharing innovative ideas and forging partnerships that will accelerate the development of DAC #technologies. It was great to represent Mead & Hunt at the Direct Air Capture Coalition Global Direct Air Capture Conference last week. Significant progress has been made but there are also important gaps to be bridged for the industry to move from first of its kind pilot projects to full scale commercialization.    Below are my key takeaways: 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠: Investors in Direct Air Capture (DAC) projects face a complex risk profile due to the emerging nature of the technology and market. Creative and innovative financing models are essential for de-risking DAC projects and encouraging investment. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝: DAC companies currently depend heavily on voluntary commitments for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Credits. Instituting regulatory frameworks and compliance markets would increase the demand for CDR credits helping DAC to scale. 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲:  DAC facilities are energy intensive and in competition with AI Data centers for clean energy sources. However, the operational and resiliency requirements of DAC facilities are more flexible than that Data centers. While DAC facilities need energy reliability, they can be designed to operate flexibly based on energy availability, especially when collocated with renewable sources. Data centers require multiple layers of redundant systems to ensure uninterrupted service. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Permitting of Class VI wells needs to be streamlined as it is currently a critical bottleneck in scaling DAC. The complexity and length of this process can significantly delay project timelines. Several states have applied for and been granted "primacy" to manage Class VI permitting locally, which can expedite approvals. 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: DAC companies must start sending the message that they are not only a climate technology but can be an economically viable solution to gain widespread adoption. Last week, CGS Assistant Research Professor Mengye Zhu presented at the Global Direct Air Capture Conference, hosted by the Direct Air Capture Coalition, Breakthrough Energy, RMI, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and Good Energy Collective, on how to scale up Direct Air Capture solutions worldwide.

🤔 What’s the state of DAC in 2025? I went to the 2025 Global Direct Air Capture (DAC) Conference in New York 🗽 to find out (and to speak about how Carbonfuture is supporting DAC projects with our MRV+ and brokerage services). Some key takeaways: 👀 2025 is the “show me” year for DAC — expect to see more and more proof points that this CDR pathway can deliver 👷 As DAC and other innovative carbon removal technologies come out of the lab and start industrializing, they are supporting new jobs for steel, concrete, and construction workers. 🏋 The current policy and investment environment have their uncertainties, but resilient companies are persevering, building flexibility and adaptability into their business models. ⛓️ Additional challenges remain, such as standardizing data and managing liability with multiple parties in the value chain (e.g., capture vs. transport vs. storage). All in all, a great event! Coming out of the 2025 Global Direct Air Capture Conference, I’m energized by the insightful discussions, valuable connections, and progress in this field. It was a thrill to work alongside the exceptional team at Direct Air Capture Coalition to bring this event to life, and I’m beyond grateful to have moderated a panel on state and local policy leadership with the brilliant minds of — Will Kain, Marcela Mulholland, Kyle Clark-Sutton, and Christopher Neidl — who shared their insightful perspectives on the vital role state governments can play in scaling DAC effectively. Throughout these 2 days, it was fantastic engaging with suppliers, policy strategists, project developers, and investors, all actively working to move DAC forward. With 40 DAC plants expected in the U.S. by the end of 2025, representing 90% of global capacity, this industry is not just poised to be a climate technology but also a driver of economic value, energy security, and industrial growth. A special shoutout for the stellar efforts of our incredible volunteers — Rosalie Krasnoff, Neha Gosula, Brenda Medeiros, Prasanna Pydipalli, Navya Gupta, Christine Leary, Will Bernholz, Emily Pope, Diandra Angiello, and Sam Kortchmar —who made our conference run seamlessly. My key takeaway from this years DAC Coalition Conference: '2025 is the year our field must prove that DAC is real, scalable and cost-effective' Mission Zero Technologies is doing this right now in real-world industrial settings with paying customers. We're enabling the research of synthetic aviation fuels with the Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC). We're creating carbon-negative construction materials with O.C.O Technology Ltd and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. We're proving the efficacy of the geological storage of atmospheric emissions through electrochemical DAC with Deep Sky. We're deploying, iterating and learning. We're getting faster and we're coming down the cost curve. More to say on this in the coming months.
