ICYMI: Deep Sky's Chief Science and Commercial Officer Phil De Luna was featured in a recent Latitude Media story about Canada's opportunity to become a carbon removal destination. Phil said it best 🎙️ "Lots of people in the Canadian government recognize that there's an opportunity here... The temperature in Canada is elevated, and it's unified. People want to build large nation-building projects, and direct air capture is an example of that." Canada has the wind at its back 🌬️ 🌿 Over 80% of electricity comes from clean sources 💧 It's the third-largest producer of hydroelectric power globally 🗺️ There's abundant space for large-scale projects 💰 Robust policy frameworks, including a 60% investment tax credit for DAC facilities 📊 Enormous carbon storage potential of up to 678 gigatons 📝 First country globally to publish a federal DAC protocol And there's a lot to gain from leading on carbon removal, including the potential for 300,000+ jobs and $143 billion in GDP by 2050 💼💲 See the full article in the comments below ⬇️

We're thrilled to announce that Deep Sky is now a member of IETA, the International Emissions Trading Association! 🎉 🌐 As the world's first tech-agnostic carbon removal project developer, we're proud to join this trusted business voice for market-based climate solutions. IETA brings together over 300 members with active stakes in international carbon markets, including major banks, energy companies, industrial leaders, and environmental NGOs. 🧪 Deep Sky's mission to remove gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere aligns perfectly with IETA's goal of delivering net zero emissions. By bringing together the most promising carbon removal technologies under one roof, we're working to create the largest supply of high-quality carbon credits on the market. 🚀 We look forward to collaborating with fellow IETA members to accelerate the development and commercialization of carbon removal solutions at the scale needed to address climate change.

My latest article in Forbes, "5 Tips For Purchasing Carbon Removals: A Business Leader's Guide" covers five concrete ways for corporate leaders to start purchasing high-quality carbon removals. Global emissions reached 41.2 billion tons of CO₂ in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for corporate climate action. Carbon removals are becoming essential—but how can companies navigate this complex market effectively? Here are 5 practical tips: 1. Prioritize deep emissions reductions first; use carbon removals strategically for unavoidable emissions. 2. Understand trade-offs between nature-based solutions (affordable but less permanent) and tech-based solutions (higher quality, more measurable). 3. Develop internal expertise or partner with buyer coalitions and intermediaries to simplify procurement. 4. Engage early to shape the market, secure supply, and overcome internal approval hurdles. 5. Partner with financially stable, proven suppliers operating in politically stable regions to minimize risk. Proactive engagement isn't just good ethics—it's smart business. BBA is pleased to highlight the US$40 million grant awarded to our client, Deep Sky, by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, a climate solutions fund founded by Bill Gates. This is the first grant the organization has awarded to a project in Canada. The grant supports the construction of the Deep Sky Alpha project in Innisfail, Alberta—a global hub for innovation and commercialization of carbon removal solutions focused on direct air capture (DAC). When it’s commissioned in the spring, the hub will test up to 10 different DAC technologies simultaneously to identify the most effective and scalable solutions for removing CO₂ from the atmosphere. BBA completed the detailed engineering for the Deep Sky Alpha hub in late 2024 and is now supporting the project’s execution through engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) mode. Congratulations to Deep Sky!

A brush fire on New York’s Long Island began Saturday afternoon and has already burned 400 acres. Fire risk in Long Island has been significantly higher than in the rest of the US Northeast for the past few months. But it has risen dramatically in late February and early March. In fact, the risk has now hit levels that we usually don’t see until well into summer. This tracks closely with Deep Sky's research on how wildfire risk is changing. Many urban areas that are not used to wildfires are now vulnerable due to climate change. Fire risk this high in March is uncommon. This should be a warning sign of what’s in store in the coming months, as well as the coming years. Read the full report here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eDjGFeCi Max Dugan-Knight
