  • Space-based solar power is becoming a real option for delivering energy where traditional infrastructure can’t reach. Aetherflux, a Breakthrough Energy Ventures company, just raised $50 million to scale its vision: capturing sunlight in space and beaming it to Earth. Their first mission supports the U.S. Department of Defense with power in remote, hard-to-access areas. As global competition heats up in space solar power, Aetherflux is moving fast with a space demonstration targeted for 2026. Index Ventures & Interlagos recently led our $50m Series A, with Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Vlad Tenev, Daniel Gallagher, Jared Leto, Laurent and F.P. Journe, and others joining. Space solar power can give the U.S. an asymmetric advantage by delivering energy where it’s needed most, day or night. This capability is especially valuable in remote or contested areas, including the Indo-Pacific, where traditional power delivery can be dangerous, expensive, or challenging. It can protect warfighters, reduce reliance on fuel convoys and infrastructure, and save taxpayer money. The United States Department of Defense’s OECIF, which invests in operational energy technology for the military, recently approved our program for funding.     🛠️ Putting direct air capture on the ground today is integral to proving its huge climate mitigation potential. DAC not only removes carbon from the atmosphere, but can provide carbon-based industries with a reliable feedstock of sustainable CO₂ to defossilise products and processes.   • Scaling low-carbon materials is critical for clean energy infrastructure, manufacturing, and national security. Brimstone is a Breakthrough Energy Ventures portfolio company expanding beyond clean cement to produce smelter-grade alumina using carbon-free rocks sourced from U.S. quarries. This novel approach reduces emissions and avoids the toxic waste associated with bauxite mining. Brimstone’s future commercial plant will be the first in a generation to produce alumina from domestic rock while also co-producing low-carbon cement and supplementary materials.   • Savor, a Breakthrough Energy Ventures portfolio company, just launched a butter alternative made using methane through gas fermentation. The result delivers the same taste, texture, and nutrition as conventional butter while avoiding the environmental impact of livestock and land-intensive crops. Savor is already working with select restaurants that are testing its butter in a variety of dishes.
