"You threw me in the garbage." That’s how Kevin De Bruyne described what happened when his foster family rejected him. With De Bruyne announcing that this is his final season at Manchester City Football Club, it can be easy to forget the struggles this now Premier League Legend went through. See at 14 he left his family home to join the youth academy of Genk and the distance necessitated living arrangements away from his parents De Bruyne has shared that his time with the foster family started well. But at the end of the season, when he returned home for the summer break, he found his mother in tears. The foster family no longer wanted him back. Not for anything he did wrong. But because he was quiet. Introverted. Different. The saddest part is he found out through the club. Not from them directly. Feeling abandoned, De Bruyne channeled his frustration into determination. He returned to Genk with a resolve to prove himself. His perseverance paid off when, in a match for Genk’s 2nd team. He came off the bench and scored 5 goals in one half. He earned a quick promotion to the 1st team. Guess what? After his performance, the same foster family approached him, claiming it had all been a misunderstanding and expressing a desire to have him back. De Bruyne said: “You threw me in the garbage. Now I’m doing well and you want me back?” That moment shaped him and it fueled his drive to succeed, shaping his career’s trajectory. ↓ Fast forward to 2021. (This story isn't told enough) De Bruyne — one of the best midfielders in the world — is at the negotiation table. But not with an agent. He used data. He had his father (a lawyer). He commissioned a full performance report through Analytics FC. De Bruyne used pure facts. → Goal Ddifference added → Elite-level chance creation → Comparisons with other top players (who earned more but did less) He showed Manchester City what he really brings to the team. And it worked. ✅ £400,000 per week ✅ Club’s highest earner ✅ 4-year deal sealed on his own terms ↓ Now in 2025. We see a true Premier League legend. 🏆 18 trophies 🏃🏼 170 assists ⚽ 102 goals 🥇 382 games From a boy being told he wasn’t wanted…to building his own value and demanding what he’s worth.
