Fire Safety Update 🧯 The UK Government has extended the Waking Watch Replacement Fund until March 2026, with up to £21.11 million of extra funds to support the installation of common alarm systems in residential buildings across England. This initiative aims to replace costly 'Waking Watch' measures with more efficient and reliable fire safety measures. Dr. Benjamin Ralph, Head of Building Safety and Fire at Hollis, comments: "The new extended Waking Watch Replacement Fund will help the move from costly Waking Watch patrols towards more reliable and automated detection and alarm systems. These systems must not be seen as an excuse to extend the time it takes to carry out cladding remediation works, though. This should not be seen as a low-cost long-term alternative for protecting residents." Following City Science’s Women in Net Zero launch event, our building physics lead, Deepika Singhal, joined a panel of very inspiring women, all from different backgrounds, with the common aim of achieving Net Zero🌱 The panellists shared their experiences about challenges, innovation, advocacy and supply chain management in Net Zero ⬇️ Key takeaways: 🔸Innovation in sustainability is happening, stay informed by reading articles and listening to podcasts to source information. 🔸To accelerate innovation we need more people to drive ideas. It was inspiring to hear about the work that Airhive is doing in carbon capture- thanks to Anna Lawson for the insight. 🔸Stronger legislation is essential for data disclosure. We must clearly understand where we stand now, and how far we need to go to close the gap to achieving net zero carbon. 🔸Understand the economics of net zero by following the money. Know what matters to your client, investor, or supply chain. Nicole Fletcher is doing incredible work with the NHS on decarbonising their supply chain. 🔸Financial incentives and green financing are powerful tools in accelerating the transition to a net zero economy - there are several initiatives in the pipeline. 🔸Communication is key, and the messaging around climate change and net zero has a huge role to play in the future. It was great to hear from Angela Howarth who shared insights from her great work in this space. Deepika emphasises the importance of the journey to net zero carbon, highlighting our new London office as a prime example of our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and demonstrating how we are progressing towards net zero. We recently undertook our April monthly monitoring inspection at 105 Victoria Street for our client, Allianz, and reflected on the progress made over the last 2+ years!   The impressive 445,000 square foot office space development in London, currently under construction, will feature a variety of amenities and aims to exceed sustainability benchmarks. Developed by BGO it is designed to operate solely on 100% renewable energy sources, ensuring net zero emissions throughout its lifecycle and 100% electrical power use.   Plus, a 25,000 ft² green space with terracing features a 100m looped 'walk and talk' track and an urban farm in development.   At Hollis, we’re delighted to be involved with extensive expertise.
