Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society.
With the Kingdom of Thailand joining IOM as a member state in 1986, the organization's cooperation with the Royal Thai Government has expanded to cover all aspects of migration affecting the Kingdom and its neighbours, including labour migration, migration health, counter trafficking, emergency and post crisis, institution building, border management, security and law enforcement.
Today, IOM has a strong presence in Thailand with over 400 personnel working on more than 50 active projects in eleven locations across the country.
Bringing media closer to the realities of migrants is key to ethical migration reporting.
Winners of IOM & Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand's Migration Journalism Grant Programme had the opportunity to visit Mae Sot, Tak province and engage with frontline workers and migrants from diverse backgrounds.

Working abroad for a higher income is a dream of many - but this dream can only be realized if migrants’ rights are safeguarded at every step of their journey.
Somchai, a Thai farmer, traveled to Sweden with a similar dream to work as a berry picker. However, upon arrival, he was met with harsh realities of exploitation and labour rights violations.

Labour migration continues to drive development in Asia. Yet, millions of migrants still face risks of exploitation.
To chart a stronger path forward for protection of migrants’ rights and corporate responsibility, IOM, European Union in Thailand and Embassy of Sweden in Thailand convened a Regional Programme Advisory Meeting in 🇹🇭 under the Migration, Business and Human Rights (MBHR) in Asia initiative.
The meeting brought together key voices from ASEAN, the private sector and civil society to reflect on progress and ways to scale impact of the programme. In 2024, IOM’s MBHR Asia has:
✅ Engaged over 200 stakeholders in policy dialogue
✅ Trained 300+ government representatives
✅ Supported 190 private sector entities in advancing ethical recruitment and responsible employment
