About us

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Global Office in Brussels acts as IOM’s liaison and coordination office to the European Union (EU) Institutions, Bodies and Agencies. IOM’s liaison with the EU was established in September 2011 at a time when the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), EU enlargement, and deeper cooperation had reinforced the centrality of migration and asylum policy. Today, the IOM Global Office in Brussels is responsible for liaison and strategic cooperation with the EU and aims to position IOM at the forefront of discussion and advocacy through evidence-based advice and recommendations on migration policies and programmes. The IOM Global Office in Brussels also guides and supports IOM Offices worldwide in their advocacy on EU related issues as well as on the development, contracting and implementation of EU-funded projects.

Strategic issues in border management require strategic partnerships…   because they produce very concrete results, as proven by the example of #Frontex and IOM - UN Migration cooperation in the Western Balkan region, particularly under the IPA Migration Project.     Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens and the Director of the IOM Global Office Brussels Lukas Gherke have met in Warsaw to enhance the relation even further in the following areas:   🔄 coordinated efforts on return, readmission, and reintegration programs, combining our unique capabilities  ⚙️ technical assistance to non-EU countries in integrated border management (with special emphasis on Ukraine, the Western Balkans, and West and North Africa)  📝 institutionalisation of bilateral cooperation by providing an adequate legal framework for future initiatives  🧩 strategic and operational coordination to avoid overlapping of functions and benefit from synergies Our successful cooperation, combining IOM’s field presence with Frontex’s operational capacity, will surely contribute to supporting Member States and partners in the field even more effectively.

  • As we mark 10-years of the Regional Protection Sensitive Migration Management programme, we celebrate our strong partnership with the European Commission's Directorate-General for EU Enlargement & Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST), Frontex, the European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and progress towards comprehensive migration governance across the Western Balkans. “We guide and assist refugee #women to access any kind of medical care in the Republic of #Moldova, starting with registration with local family doctors who can follow them with professionalism. Pregnant women frequently have questions about various aspects of their pregnancy and postnatal care, but they also always tell us about their hopes. The #hope that this war will end, that they will be able to return home, that they and their #children will have a bright and peaceful future.”   Diana, 20, has been one of the 11 IOM - UN Migration Moldova's Health Mediators since April 2024.   Over the last year, #IOM in Moldova, supported by #EU4Health funding, has assisted more than 6,300 refugees and migrants, both through direct participation in information sessions and by supporting in accessing health services based across the country. #WorldHealthDay  #HealthForAll #HopefulFutures #LeaveNoOneNoWhereBehind IOM Europe and Central Asia IOM Global Office Brussels

EN/PL This year, World Health Day marks the launch of the global campaign "Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures," dedicated to advancing maternal and newborn health by eliminating preventable deaths and promoting equitable access to care for all—at every stage of life. At IOM, we make healthcare more accessible by guiding individuals through medical systems, managing appointments, and raising awareness about patient rights. For mothers, we assist with pregnancy registration, finding doctors and hospitals, and newborn registration. We also help with pediatrician referrals, appointment support, vaccination information, and emotional support services. Together, we’re building healthier futures—starting from day one. Thank you European Commission for supporting this important initiative!

  • The 11th annual EU-IOM Senior Officials Meeting in Brussels today focused on the importance of our strategic partnership to ensure well-managed migration policies that respond to emerging global challenges. "The partnership between IOM and the EU has been fundamental to serving the most vulnerable people in the world and assisting States to manage migration in a safe, orderly and effective way,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “More than ever, our cooperation needs to deliver. It should be focused, global in scope and comprehensive in practice.”   🔗 tinyurl.com/2vm4ej6n European Commission | IOM - UN Migration

  • In #Ethiopia, Tsige and other displaced women demonstrate their incredible resilience. By supporting one another, their efforts have led the way for other women to get the psychosocial support, sense of community, and access to learning skills that they need to rebuild their lives. Their story, and that of all women, is that of courage, transformation, and hope for a better future #ForAllWomenAndGirls. 🙏 With support from EU in Emergencies. 🔗 Read their story: https://lnkd.in/eMpMF-cx

  • IOM Director General Amy Pope spoke at the 9th Conference on Syria in Brussels this week, "Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition":   "Syria is at a critical crossroads. And we know from our most recently conducted data analysis, that for the 6.9 million IDPs who now live in Syria - people who were pushed out by conflict and pushed out by economic instability - are being called back home. (...) So these are the places where we must act together as one UN. And I can tell you that for our organization, as champions - with UNDP, UNHCR and OCHA - of the Secretary General's IDP Solutions Agenda, we’re ready to support, not only with humanitarian support for communities in need, but also to help rebuild devastated economies and infrastructures, in partnership with the caretaker government and local leaders. The moment to act is now".   Read the full statement: https://lnkd.in/eCvPkC6P IOM - UN Migration | IOM Europe and Central Asia Photo: European Union ©
