About us
On behalf of the 20 clubs within the province, The Auckland Rugby Union is responsible for the, management, administration, marketing and development of rugby in the area. It is a job everyone associated with the Union takes great pride in. Based at Eden Park, the home of many of New Zealand's greatest rugby moments, the union facilitates the running of school, club and representative competitions in which Auckland teams participate. These include primary school competitions like the Bill McLaren trophy, Club competitions such as the world renowned Gallaher Shield, right up to the Mitre 10 Cup. The development of the game is assisted through such schemes as the Auckland Rugby Academy and numerous coaching courses. Volunteers are a vital part of our rugby community, and as a union we absolutely appreciate their efforts and do what we can to support them. One of the most valued and crucial volunteer groups are referees. Games simply do not go ahead without them and it is important they are well supported on and off the field. From those who are controlling premier games to all the Mum or Dad coaches that find themselves with a whistle, all of them deserve courtesy and respect from those on the field as well as the sideline.

Auckland Rugby Union are excited to announce that Bernie McCahill has been elected as President. Bernie has been involved in Auckland Rugby for 40 years and continues to give his time generously to promote the game. Bernie’s involvement over and above his distinguished playing career includes being a proud member of NZ Barbarians, a coach and a leader of Marist culminating in his appointment of club President in 2016. Bernie had an outstanding career, representing Auckland from 1984 to 1993, playing 91 games and scoring 113 points. At a National level Bernie made his All-Black debut in 1987 and went on to play 10 test and 22 tour matches. St Peters College School 1st XV 1981-82 Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby Club 1984-93 NZ Colts 1984-85 Auckland Rugby Union 1985-93 (91 Games) All Blacks (884#, debut vs Argentina 1987) 1987-91 (32 Games including 10 tests) In addition to Bernie's election, Jason Chandler & Jamie Hodgetts have been elected to the board. Jason's relevant experiences range across his professional playing career, governance having been on several boards including within rugby community, and his career notably as a successful business owner. Jamie has strong experience in leading marketing/comms within complex and high-profile stakeholder operations and has a had strong involvement & connection in the Auckland community game.
