The platform for innovation and encouragement of entrepreneurship in the Built Environment.

Over ons

BK-launch is the platform for innovation and encouragement of entrepreneurship in the faculty of Architecture & the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology. Its goal is to create an entrepreneurial community for student ventures, with a vision to transform the Built Environment. Driven by ambitious students active with a (future) venture in the Built Environment. Facilitated by faculty members and Strategic Partners whose knowledge, expertise and investment constitute the foundation of the platform. What makes this platform special, is the growing network of advocates of entrepreneurship that will form an academic source and example for future entrepreneurs. Their story and experience together with the foundation laid by the Partners will serve two MSc Elective courses (AR0131 & AR0144) meant not only to teach students about the importance of entrepreneurship, but also to help their brilliant ideas become potential future ventures. However, BK-Launch doesn’t stop there. We aspire to achieve a real life BK-Launch MAKE IT space that serves as an incubator for exceptional ideas.

At the event, innovations enabling a future-proof living environment by 2050 were presented, under the slogan ‘Leap Through Innovation’. During the session Start-ups as Game Changers, BK-Launch researcher Jip Leendertse shared preliminary findings from his research. Together with Liselore Havermans, PhD from TKI Bouw en Techniek, they first explained why start-ups are so important for innovation and how their development unfolds in the built environment sector. He then zoomed in on the challenges that arise between the pilot phase and the implementation phase. This is where many start-ups struggle. In this phase, the target audience and market change, often without realizing that start-ups particularly benefit from paid and repeatable contracts. Sometimes, the innovation even conflicts with another party’s business model within the chain, preventing implementation, even when the product clearly adds value. To bring the discussion to a practical level, the session concluded with a conversation featuring Paul Das from start-up Inside Out. He gave a clear example and a possible solution: start-ups should engage early with the stakeholders who will later set the framework, so those frameworks are aligned with innovation and future-proof buildings right from the start. 👀 Ontdek de biobased tafel! https://lnkd.in/ebUTkHgW 📷 Robèrt Kroonen #duurzaambouwen #biobasedbouwen #biobasedboulevard Provincie Zuid-Holland | YES!Delft | Thomas Liebrand | Henk Rusting | Willy Spanjer | Floor Hoogenboezem

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟭: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸’𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿? Entrepreneurial ecosystem elements by Erik Stam and Andrew van de Ven (2021) 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀? Entrepreneurial ecosystems are a combination of actors (universities, government, investors, other entrepreneurs etc.) and factors (knowledge, talent, regulations etc.) that influence the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 of entrepreneurship. Or: It’s everything and everyone around entrepreneurs that influences whether they establish start-ups and whether start-ups grow. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝘂𝗽𝘀? In my research I focus on a specific type of entrepreneurship, start-ups. Start-ups are young companies that are looking for a business model with the intent to build a scalable business, often based on a new technology. There is a lot of research that start-ups are not founded or grown in isolation. The context around start-ups matters (a lot). Research on this context is clustered in the entrepreneurial ecosystem concept. This is why I focus on the influence of entrepreneurial ecosystems on start-ups.  To better understand how entrepreneurial ecosystems influence start-ups we need to know which elements from the context matter the most. Currently, it seems that, in academia, we are converging to the model presented in this week’s paper. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸’𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘆? The authors present a model of the elements that make up entrepreneurial ecosystems. They argue that there are two types of elements that matter in entrepreneurial ecosystems. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 and 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. The resources are all the stuff entrepreneurs can or need to use to build their start-up (money, knowledge, talent etc.). Resources are provided by other actors. The institutions are the rules that guide interactions between actors. These can be formal (laws, regulations) or informal (norms, values). In total they identify 10 elements, seven types of resources and three types of institutions (see figure). The authors propose that the combination of the quality of these elements in a region determines the quality of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in that region. Based on the Netherlands, they also show some early evidence that there is a relation between the quality of entrepreneurial ecosystems and the amount of high-growth firms in regions. If you wonder, why the regional scale? Good question! Next week I will focus on why we should think about entrepreneurial ecosystems at the regional scale.  If you have other questions or suggestions for topics/papers you would like to see covered let me know! 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆: Entrepreneurial ecosystems consist of ten elements that influence how often start-ups are founded in a region and how often they grow.
