The CGIAR Sustainable Farming Program aims to deliver integrated solutions, leveraging CGIAR’s comparative advantages and long-standing expertise. Our work builds on progress from the Excellence in Agronomy, Plant Health, and Mixed Farming Systems Initiatives, uniting the experience of 12 CGIAR Centers and multiple partners to accelerate impact.
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) proudly marks the 183rd cropping season of the Long-Term Continuous Cropping Experiment (LTCCE) this April 2025.
Established in 1962, the LTCCE has now surpassed the historic Rothamsted experiment, becoming the world’s longest-running experiment in terms of cropping seasons, made possible with triple rice cropping per year. The LTCCE provides critical insights into the sustainability of intensive rice systems, assessing long-term trends in productivity, soil health, varietal performance, and climate change impacts.
Stay tuned as we share the latest findings, lessons learned, and the innovations shaping the next chapter of this historic research.

🚜🌱 Restoring Life to Soils with Regenerative Agriculture
In this video, we showcase how key biological processes are being restored through regenerative agriculture practices, such as legume rotations, reduced tillage, residue incorporation, and organic matter additions, at our Long-Term Trial site at International Potato Center (CIP).
Our strategic partner, the Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology Laboratory - "Marino Tabusso", led by Doris Zuñiga, plays a crucial role in monitoring and guiding the recovery of soil health in degraded lands.
One encouraging sign of success: the appearance of nitrogen-fixing nodules in the bean crops—a clear indicator that essential soil functions are beginning to return.

Event Recap:
Excited to share highlights from the launch of the Sustainable Farming Science Program (SFP) at CGIAR Science Week 2025—a pivotal moment as CGIAR unveiled its new Science and Innovation Portfolio, designed to tackle the world’s most urgent agricultural challenges: climate change, rural poverty, gender and social inequality, and food system fragility.
As part of this launch, we had the privilege learning from our scientists, Lulseged Tamene and Gizaw Desta on Ethiopia’s Soil Fertility Model, a real world example of how scientific research is being transformed into practical decision-support tools for farmers, policymakers, and development partners.
Key Takeaways from Our Session:
The Ethiopia Soil Fertility Model is grounded in robust science and extensive field data, providing a framework for guiding nutrient application strategies that are tailored to local conditions.
These data-driven insights are already informing policy and practice, helping to optimize soil health and boost agricultural productivity across diverse landscapes.
The session highlighted how decision-support tools, built on sound scientific evidence, can accelerate the adoption of sustainable farming practices—paving the way for next-generation models and AI-driven solutions.
We shared lessons learned from the model’s implementation, including the importance of co-creation with farmers and local experts, and outlined the next steps for scaling this approach across Ethiopia and beyond.
The SFP’s mission is clear: to deliver science-based, practical solutions that empower smallholder farmers, enhance resilience, and build sustainable food systems worldwide. Ethiopia’s Soil Fertility Model is just one example of how CGIAR and its partners are turning research into real-world impact.
