We partnered with The Subtext and Unevenly Distributed on our latest webinar "What’s Next for African Startup Exits", where tech experts Osarumen Osamuyi and Derin Adebayo to explored the evolution and challenges facing the African tech ecosystem, particularly around startup exits. Here are the highlights: 1️⃣ What’s Not Working in African Tech Startups? African startups face a tough decision: foreign capital vs. local context. Most funding comes from global investors, yet African businesses are tailored for local markets. The tension? Valuation standards don’t align. For example, a global player like Flutterwave could face barriers listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange due to differing metrics. The challenge: do you stick with a local model or go global for an exit? This dilemma is why meaningful exits remain rare. 🤔💸 2️⃣ Predicting the Next Tech Bubble in Africa While predicting the exact bubbles is tough, we can spot the signs. Data from other markets, like Southeast Asia and India, shows that tech bubbles eventually come, bringing exits with them. The key? Invest during the down periods, when everyone else is pulling back. Those companies will be the ones ready to take advantage when the bubble hits. 📊💡 3️⃣ Balancing Impact & Returns in Early-Stage Investments Venture capital isn’t about guaranteed outcomes. It’s about investing in a diverse portfolio, knowing many will fail, but a few will hit big. For those focused on impact and returns, the best strategy is letting success unfold naturally, no need to over-structure exits. And for investment horizons? The classic 10-year model is stretching to 14-15 years as companies stay private longer. Flexibility is key! 🕰️🌱 💡Want to be part of conversations like this? Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of joining CNBC Africa for a brief discussion about the Dream VC and A&A Collective African Investment Salaries Report. 📺 https://lnkd.in/dT2-6Z-H A few insights I shared included: 1️⃣ There are many factors driving lower salaries among African-focused funds compared to international ones, but the biggest reasons come down to: i) Lower Fund Size (AUM) in African focused funds compared to global ones ii) Downward pressure on salaries by a DFI-Heavy LP stack to pay regionally competitive salaries iii) Many firms continue to benchmark salaries against salaries in financial services locally - rather than against global VC standards 2️⃣ Employee compensation is gradually improving, and our data does suggest a trend towards global standards over the past 5 years - however in the meantime phantom carry / bonuses, reflected as a cash bonuses in cases of liquidity, and dedicated team-wide or employee-specific upskilling budgets appear to be the most competitive ways to retain employees and raise team competency without higher standing costs 3️⃣ A major difference between institutional #investment markets in India and South East Asia is the scarcity of African pension funds among VC and PE limited partners - most pension funds are not hitting their allocations for alternative investments, limiting the pool of money available for African investment firms Check out the Full Africa Investment Salaries Report here: https://lnkd.in/djT8rGcH Let me know what you think below & follow me at Mark Kleyner for more insights on venture capital in Africa and Emerging Markets 🔔 It was a pleasure to work with the mixed Dream VC and A&A Collective team featuring Ijeoma Devika Jeremiah Haroun Araba Yvonne Frances to make the report come to fruition, and I look forward to revisiting this project at larger scale for a future edition! Thank you to CNBC Africa, Tabitha Muthoni and Harry Clynch for setting this up. #venturecapital #compensation #salaries #privateequity #cvc #africa #impactinvesting #privatecapital #investing #investissement #dreamvc
