I had the great pleasure of delivering a keynote address at the Raheny Rotary Peace Conference at Dublin City University All Hallows Campus today. I discussed the question of whether Peace is a Common Purpose? Insightful and challenging day, but *hope* emerged as a consistent theme. Sincere thanks to all the wonderful speakers and participants. The Polaris building is now home to a wide range of cutting edge research projects as the new home of Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics, the DCU School of Health and Human Performance, and a range of other researchers from DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing and the DCU Faculty of Science and Health. Among the facilities is a new High Performance Lab focused on elite sports research, an area of expertise for which Dublin City University is widely recognised as an international leader.
An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister James Lawless officially open DCU’s new Polaris Building. Polaris is DCU’s newest building and Ireland’s most advanced facility for STEM Teaching and Learning. The building accommodates over 3,000 students from the DCU Faculty of Science and Health, and the DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing. The new Polaris Building on DCU’s Glasnevin Campus was officially opened today by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD and James Lawless TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. Polaris is the new home for DCU’s School of Health & Human Performance and will include a High Performance Lab focused on high performance sports research, a Life Lab to help students develop improved health literacy, and a Movement Lab that will use state-of-the-art indoor sport facilities to help the local community access data analytics and visualisation techniques. Speaking at the official opening, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD said: “This landmark building is a testament to Dublin City University’s innovative vision and its commitment to excellence in STEM teaching, learning and research. The state’s significant investment in Polaris is a strategically important one in terms of Ireland’s skills pipeline. In Ireland and worldwide, the demand for talented STEM graduates is greater than ever, and the facilities Polaris offers will ensure that DCU students stay at the forefront of developments in this field.” Minister James Lawless said: “This building represents a significant investment in our future – funding of €24 million was provided by my Department to co-fund its construction. Supporting the next generation of researchers, scientists and innovators is vital. They will bring new discoveries and insights, helping us tackle major societal challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence and improving health outcomes for our citizens. I am excited to see the contributions that the students in the Polaris building will make.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eWBUsdGF #WeAreDCU #DublinCityUniversity DCU Alumni DCU Global DCU Business School DCU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences DCU Educational Trust DCU Research DCU Student Life

We Underestimate the Manosphere at Our Peril. Dr. Catherine Baker, Prof. Debbie Ging and Dr Maja Brandt Andreasen's DCU Anti-Bullying Centre study on how TikTok and YouTube Shorts are bombarding boys and men with misogynist content was featured in The New York Times. Dr Baker says messaging including: feminism has gone too far, men are losing out on jobs to women and women prefer to stay at home rather than work, resonated because it plays into young men’s insecurities around their bodies — many of the accounts glorify fitness — as well as their future success and their relationships. Young men might believe that in order to be successful, they can’t show vulnerability; they need wealth, six-pack abs and social, political and cultural dominance. Three projects, featuring five Dublin City University researchers have been awarded additional funding worth up to €5.5 million in funding to Dublin City University as they enter the final twelve month phase of the Research Ireland National Challenge Fund. The latest funding comes as part of an announcement of a total of €5 million for ten teams announced by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless today. The ten remaining teams now have the chance to compete for an additional €2 million awarded to one team in each of the two categories in today’s announcement. Over the next twelve months each team will advance prototypes and demonstrate the tangible impact of their projects. The National Challenge Fund, a programme funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, has supported 96 teams to identify problems related to Ireland’s Green Transition and Digital Transformation and collaborate directly with those stakeholders most affected by them to create real and tangible solutions. https://lnkd.in/e9thsVwe
