Narrative Banking, an innovative AI-driven fintech start-up originating from Dublin City University Business School, is set to transform small business banking experiences – starting this month! Founded by Professor Michael Dowling and Dr. Yulia Plaksina, Narrative Banking was awarded €500,000 from the Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund last year. The funding facilitated the development of their first AI application, Finley, which uniquely blends financial storytelling with actionable insights, empowering small businesses to achieve meaningful growth. Now Narrative Banking is launching its landmark live market pilot for Finley – a world-first initiative in conversational banking for growth. The pilot, conducted by a leading Irish creative agency, places their innovative generative and agentic AI-driven banking application directly into the hands of small business owners. Is conflict in the workplace good for innovation and results? The friction that comes with disagreement, even if it’s awkward sometimes, allows for creativity, growth and innovation. Dr Melrona Kirrane, Associate Professor of Organisational Psychology at DCU Business School, says that in theory and practice, too much of a good thing is a bad thing. “If everyone is agreeing then nobody is thinking. Too much cohesion leads to groupthink. The endorsement of a particular way of behaving, thinking, opinions and viewpoints can make those who don’t share them feel like they don’t belong. Any dissent they raise is shot down so self-censorship prevails – and that’s a disaster all round. “The absence of conflict is a bit of a red flag,” says Dr Kirrane. Last week, I had the pleasure of co-hosting the 2025 Spring Meeting of the International Partnership of Business Schools - IPBS Network with DCU Business School. Over the course of the three days, we had the opportunity to engage in promising discussions with a potential new partner from the UIBE Business School in Beijing, China. It’s truly exciting to explore the prospect of expanding our global network, which currently includes 11 esteemed business schools across Europe and the Americas, to welcome such a prestigious institution from China. Dragons' Den 2025 🐉 Over three high-energy days, the third floor of Dublin City University Business School was buzzing with ambition as our final-year students pitched their business ventures as part of the New Enterprise Development (NED) module. Each team brought forward months of hard work — from concept development to market research and financial planning — culminating in their pitch to a panel of Dragons drawn from our brilliant alumni network and industry partners. The atmosphere throughout was electric — from nervous excitement to triumphant relief. Students rose to the occasion, delivering pitches across a spectrum of sectors: sustainability, tech, consumer innovation, agri-business and more. Most importantly, they walked away not just with experience, but with confidence in their own entrepreneurial voice. The first intake (class of 2022/23) recently graduated - here's what three members of that class said about the programme: 👉 I was delighted when I first learned of the Masters programme via an email from the L&DI. It was exactly what I had been looking for, a programme that would blend a traditional academic approach to andragogy with actual current industry needs. Another aspect that particularly drew me to the programmes was that of having a strategic lens, which can be an area that L&D professionals sometimes struggle with at an organisational level when seeking to be seen as credible strategic partners. 👉 The Master’s was attractive because it was a new and unique collaboration between DCU and L&DI and it was pitched at a strategic level. Given that my business provides consultancy to clients, it is imperative I keep up-to-date with contemporary thinking, both on an academic and practical level. It was also a fantastic opportunity to network with other experts in our industry and to gain wider insights into best practice. The core modules were an exact fit for my needs, and I was particularly interested in HR Analytics, Digital Learning Design and Contemporary Issues in Strategic L&D. The blended delivery meant that I could fit the programme in around my own business. 👉 I was attracted to the programme to develop my strategic knowledge of L&D, gain updates on trends and developments in the area of L&D and to learn from fellow practitioners. The mix of topics was very attractive, and amongst other areas I wanted to deepen my expertise in the areas of Strategy, Leadership & Change, Digital Learning and Data Analytics. Living in Galway, the fact that the programme is blended made it very accessible to me. I believed this delivery method would offer the benefits of virtual learning, and also enable the deeper connections made possible by face-to-face interactions.
