Did you graduate from DCU in October 2024 or March 2025? If so, we’d love to hear from you. DCU’s most recent graduates are invited to take part in the Graduate Outcomes Survey. This short survey is part of a national initiative led by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), and it's designed to gather insights on what our graduates go on to do in the months after finishing their degree—whether that’s employment, further study, travel, or something else entirely. Your feedback helps us enhance teaching, improve student supports, and better understand graduate employment trends. To say thanks, all participants will be entered into a draw to win One-for-All vouchers worth €200 or €50. The survey link has been sent to both your personal and DCU email addresses, keep an eye out and don’t miss your chance to have your say!

Recent graduate from Gaza, Sarraj Alsersawi received a first-class honours and ranked top of his class despite the war in Gaza claiming the lives of many of his loved ones and threatening his family’s safety on a day-to-day basis. Sarraj, who studied the MSc of Electronic and Computer Technology (Internet of Things), came to Dublin City University from Gaza in September 2023 as part of the Ireland-Palestine Scholarship Programme (IPSP). Faced with devastating losses, such as the destruction of his house and past university, Sarraj used his studies as a distraction, which he stated was presumably the best way forward for him and his family. His sheer determination and hard work led him to excel in his studies, and receive a job offer from Stryker to develop medical devices. Sarraj notes that the war has claimed the lives of an immense proportion of the region’s professional people, and he feels a strong sense of responsibility to return to Gaza whenever the rebuilding phase commences, commenting “It's essential for us young people who were able to get a good education at some point to go back and try to help rebuild their communities at some point. It's a bit early now, but this is something that I always keep in the back of my mind.” Read more about Sarraj’s incredible story here: https://lnkd.in/e8_M6WKG #WeAreDCU

A recently-developed research paper examines the challenges of Information Retrieval within the expanding domains of the Internet of Things and the Web of Things. The study, conducted by Dr Annalina Caputo from the DCU School of Computing, alongside researchers Dr Cristyan M. and Dr Juan Manuel Fernández Luna from Universidad de Granada, proposes a multi-dimensional taxonomy framework to address these challenges. The paper investigates traditional IR sub-tasks, such as indexing, querying, ranking, and crawling, in the context of IoT and WoT, identifying obstacles and posing open research questions. It also provides a comprehensive review of existing search engines, taxonomies, and evaluation frameworks for these environments. The overarching goal of the research is to guide future advancements in IR techniques tailored to the intricate search demands of the IoT and WoT cyber-world. A new study on cell-penetrating peptides has been published, highlighting the potential of AI-driven tools for designing more effective and less toxic CPPs. The research, titled "Strategies for the design of biomimetic cell-penetrating peptides using AI-driven in silico tools for drug delivery," was a collaboration between DCU's Prof Nicholas Dunne and researchers from School of Pharmacy at QUB. The paper focuses on CPPs and how they are crucial for delivering therapeutic molecules across cell membranes, acting as "Trojan horses" for macromolecules that struggle with cellular entry and can trigger immune responses. These 5-30 amino acid peptides can be synthetically created, derived from natural sources, or be chimeras, with properties like cationic, hydrophobic, amphipathic, or intrinsically disordered. Traditional CPP design approaches are costly and time-consuming, often limited to modifying known sequences. However, AI has emerged as a promising alternative, with tools analysing peptide characteristics and predicting in vivo behavior. Advanced methods use supervised machine learning to predict cell penetration without extensive prior knowledge, reducing development costs and increasing successful drug delivery. The future emphasises user-friendly deep learning and bioinformatic tools accessible to bioscientists, with web-accessible platforms playing a crucial role. While no definitive rules exist, in silico and AI-driven tools allow for rapid screening and the potential to discover novel, more effective and less toxic CPPs. ‘I kept going for my family’ – Gazan student graduates top of his class at Dublin City University. Sarraj Alsersawi received an MSc in Electronic and Computer Technology DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing. A young man from Gaza has said it was his love for his family in the Middle East that kept him going to graduate top of his class at Dublin City University. Sarraj, who is from northern Gaza, persevered through his Master’s in Electronic and Computer Technology while the war with Israel raged at home. “I am really proud of myself given all the challenges that I faced. But the support that I was lucky to receive, especially from my programme director, assured me that I could overcome those difficulties,” Sarraj said. “And then I chose DCU, despite receiving offers from other universities. I chose it, firstly because of the content and secondly because there is so much room for potential and so many ways to contribute to the development of the university. I had the chance to work as a tutor and demonstrator, which was fantastic.” Read more in Irish Independent: https://lnkd.in/e5_FAZNq #WeAreDCU #DublinCityUniversity DCU Alumni DCU Global DCU Business School DCU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences DCU Faculty of Science and Health DCU Educational Trust DCU Students' Union DCU Student Life
