4 months ago, I was approached to lead the RBC x MaRS Discovery District Women in Cleantech Accelerator and got the opportunity of a lifetime to spend the next 2 years working alongside nine phenomenal Founders. This week, we brought the group together in New York City in-person for the first time since the cohort began. There's a lot of doom and gloom these days about the future, but now more than ever it's important to find pockets of inspiration, tenacity and relentless drive. Spending the last few days with these incredible women, I found exactly that. If you don't yet know these Founders, you absolutely must: 🏥 Aditi Sitolay (Synoro Med): enabling low-carbon healthcare by redesigning single-use medical supplies, such as IV bags, for safe reuse and providing an automated reprocessing service for cleaning and sterilization. 🌊 Annie Dahan (Seacork Studio): developing high-performance, 100% compostable and carbon-negative architectural acoustic panels made from its proprietary seaweed-based material. 🌱 Blaine Pearson (Seedark): tackling climate adaptation and resilience by revolutionizing the way seeds are collected and organized for critical ecological restoration and carbon projects. 🏭 Christine Gabardo (CERT Systems): converting CO2 emissions into high-value chemicals using a proprietary direct CO2 electrolysis technology. 💧 Diana Virgovicova and Shirley Zhong (Xatoms): developing photocatalysts capable of eliminating contaminants and significantly reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases through the use of AI and quantum chemistry. 👕 Dr. Macarena Cataldo (Viridis Research Inc): effectively removing dyes, colorants, chemicals, and surfactants in industrial textile wastewater treatment through electrochemical oxidation. 🐛 Sofia Bonilla, PhD (ALT PRO Advantage - Next Gen Pet Nutrition): producing novel ingredients that are hypoallergenic, nutrient-rich, and sustainable using insect protein, fungi, and microalgae. 🌧️ Tatiana Estevez (Permalution): ensuring water security through fog and cloud water collection technologies that capture water from the atmosphere.  💨 Vida Gabriel (Ph.D) (TerraFixing): harnessing innovative direct air capture (DAC) to remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere in cold climates. We're excited to announce Permalution's successful deployment of our Fog Collection Technology in the Middle East! In collaboration with Isle Utilities and our local private partners, this project marks a breakthrough in atmospheric water harvesting for arid regions. 🚀 The system is live and running. Fog events have been captured by our system, we have collected water, and we can share this: ✅ It’s enough to support desert agriculture 🌱 ✅ It can help restore ecosystems & create oases 🌿 ✅ It offers a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to desalination 💡 While exact amounts remain confidential, as the fog season progresses, we continue to monitor results and refine insights for future reporting and expansion. An inspiring start to #COP29 in #Baku. Along with viewing the inauguration, I had the privilege of visiting the #Canada pavilion and meeting with the Honorable Steven Guilbeault, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change. This year’s emphasis on climate finance at COP29 is not just timely—it’s essential. As climate challenges intensify, innovative financing models are critical to advancing solutions that can meet both immediate and long-term needs. At Permalution, our fog and cloud water collection solutions are designed to sustainably address water access and climate adaptation. However, scaling these solutions requires robust financial support to ensure they reach the communities and ecosystems most affected. I look forward to the upcoming meetings with leaders and partners here at COP29 to drive forward these critical discussions on climate finance, adaptation, and sustainable water access.
