4 months ago, I was approached to lead the RBC x MaRS Discovery District Women in Cleantech Accelerator and got the opportunity of a lifetime to spend the next 2 years working alongside nine phenomenal Founders. This week, we brought the group together in New York City in-person for the first time since the cohort began. There's a lot of doom and gloom these days about the future, but now more than ever it's important to find pockets of inspiration, tenacity and relentless drive. Spending the last few days with these incredible women, I found exactly that. If you don't yet know these Founders, you absolutely must: 🏥 Aditi Sitolay (Synoro Med): enabling low-carbon healthcare by redesigning single-use medical supplies, such as IV bags, for safe reuse and providing an automated reprocessing service for cleaning and sterilization. 🌊 Annie Dahan (Seacork Studio): developing high-performance, 100% compostable and carbon-negative architectural acoustic panels made from its proprietary seaweed-based material. 🌱 Blaine Pearson (Seedark): tackling climate adaptation and resilience by revolutionizing the way seeds are collected and organized for critical ecological restoration and carbon projects. 🏭 Christine Gabardo (CERT Systems): converting CO2 emissions into high-value chemicals using a proprietary direct CO2 electrolysis technology. 💧 Diana Virgovicova and Shirley Zhong (Xatoms): developing photocatalysts capable of eliminating contaminants and significantly reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases through the use of AI and quantum chemistry. 👕 Dr. Macarena Cataldo (Viridis Research Inc): effectively removing dyes, colorants, chemicals, and surfactants in industrial textile wastewater treatment through electrochemical oxidation. 🐛 Sofia Bonilla, PhD (ALT PRO Advantage - Next Gen Pet Nutrition): producing novel ingredients that are hypoallergenic, nutrient-rich, and sustainable using insect protein, fungi, and microalgae. 🌧️ Tatiana Estevez (Permalution): ensuring water security through fog and cloud water collection technologies that capture water from the atmosphere.  💨 Vida Gabriel (Ph.D) (TerraFixing): harnessing innovative direct air capture (DAC) to remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere in cold climates. To the NYC ecosystem of builders, investors, and supporters, thank you for leaning in to show the cohort what a fantastic landing pad the city truly is (special thanks to our partners Stacey Weismiller, Robert M. Mitchell, Ji Ke and the team at HAX/SOSV, Timothy Hoffman and team at Columbia Technology Ventures, Sonam Velani and team at Streetlife Ventures, New York City Economic Development Corporation, Uptake Alliance, Newlab, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and so many others). So excited to continue to strengthen our ties despite all the craziness of the world today. The future belongs to those who build it, and ours is in good hands with you all.

It's a given that surgeons work with scalpels that have been previously used and sterilized, but most of us would recoil at the thought of reusing a blood bag. In this episode of Solve for X, Synoro Med founder and CEO Aditi Sitolay challenges that instinctive "ick" factor and explains how her company is developing a more sustainable alternative. • The Toronto Star recently published a powerful article highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices in healthcare and the inspiring work being done across Canada to make a difference. It's truly motivating to see so many dedicated individuals and organizations working towards a greener future. Synoro Med is honored to be featured in this piece alongside other Canadian innovators and contribute to this important conversation. We believe that collaboration is key to tackling this complex challenge, and we're proud to be part of this growing movement. We're working towards a circular economy in healthcare by prioritizing the "reuse" R. Through safe and effective reprocessing of reusable medical devices, we aim to reduce waste and minimize the embodied carbon associated with the linear "take-make-dispose" model of medical device consumption. Meet Aditi Sitolay – Founder & CEO of Synoro Medical Technologies Inc. (Synoro Med). Aditi is a graduate from the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering and joined our Venture Founder program to build Synoro Med! Read down below to learn more about Aditi, what she’s most passionate about and the secret to success in her business. Describe Synoro Med: "We are redesigning single-use medical supplies to be reusable, along with adding a process to clean and sterilize, to create a circular economy and reduce waste in healthcare." What was essential to the success of your business? "The support I have received from my network of friends, colleagues, professors, e@UBC staff, and many different mentors has definitely helped me as I work to build this company." What are you most passionate about? "I am driven to make a positive social impact on my community and aim to do this through my passion for advancing environmental sustainability in healthcare." Did anyone specifically inspire you whilst on your journey to create your business? "Rashmi Prakash was my instructor for a course I took about the impact of biomedical engineering on society and this was where I came across the fact that 29 pounds of waste is produced per patient per day in healthcare facilities. Learning this was my motivation to reduce waste in healthcare. Rashmi was also one of the first entrepreneurs I got to know, and she was also working on advancing sustainability in healthcare through her startup, Aruna Revolution – where they are developing compostable menstrual pads. She was the first person I spoke with when I started exploring this area, and she provided a lot of resources and wisdom which was very helpful. Overall, just seeing her work with Aruna Revolution has been inspiring because it showed me how it is possible to solve critical problems and make positive change!" Thank you Aditi for being our #FounderFriday feature this week!
