2217 Kingston Rd is taking shape! Here, crews are guiding a mass timber panel into place for the Thunder Woman Healing Lodge, a six-storey transitional housing designed to uplift and empower formerly incarcerated Indigenous women. There’s no shortage of talk about affordable housing in Toronto. But building it on a tight downtown site, with urgency, care, and intention is another story. At 215 Wellesley, the Elizabeth Fry Society of Toronto is doing exactly that. The eight-storey, modular mass timber building will deliver 48 supportive housing units for women, non-binary people, and Indigenous women, many of whom have experienced incarceration, poverty, and systemic barriers to housing. While navigating the realities of a constrained infill site in Cabbagetown, the design follows trauma-informed principles, acknowledging how physical environments can either support or re-trigger individuals who have experienced trauma. The goal is to create spaces that feel safe, supportive, empowering, and non-institutional. 215 Wellesley is not just modular. It’s modular, mid-rise, mass timber. Not just supportive housing, but architecture shaped around healing. Not just fast , but precise, sustainable, and deeply human.
