Earth Day is just three weeks away, and this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” champions the use of renewable energy. Leading up to the day, each week we will be celebrating an office that reduced emissions from the previous year. We begin with Houston (https://lnkd.in/etNPdqdZ). Our H-Town office reduced its emissions from electricity use, partly due to its relocation early last year. While the move was just a short distance, it brought new energy efficiency gains, such as all LED lighting with motion sensors and an HVAC system with automation, contributing to smart energy use. The new office also has ENERGY STAR-certified appliances. In addition to these improvements in reducing power demand, the Texas electric grid increased its use of solar power and decreased coal use in its fuel mix, making the power supply less carbon-intensive. Firmwide, in 2024, Thornton Tomasetti purchased renewable energy certificates to cover the electricity use of its U.S. and U.K. office operations. Since we do not own or operate our leased spaces, this method ensures that we are still supporting renewable development globally. Stay tuned for upcoming posts highlighting the sustainability efforts of our other offices. #OurPowerOurPlanet #EarthMonth

Steel takes center stage in Louisville, Kentucky, this week as NASCC: The Steel Conference kicks off. From Wednesday, April 2 to Friday, April 4, structural engineers, steel fabricators, erectors and detailers will exchange ideas and best practices through more than 270 technical sessions. Among those presenting is Chief Technology Officer Robert Otani, who will talk about how AI tools being developed by Thornton Tomasetti’s CORE studio are being used for everything from reducing embodied carbon in building design to facilitating rapid prototyping and optioneering. The Wednesday session, “Real-life AI Applications for Structural Engineers,” begins at 11:30 a.m. Also on Wednesday Associate Principal Mara Braselton will lead the session “Connection Design-The Checks Not to Forget!” at 1:45 p.m. Mara will highlight some of the most common mistakes new engineers make when designing connections. She is also presenting “Moment Connection-Design & Delegation Tips & Tricks” on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. This session will cover how different types of moment connections are designed and what aspects are most important to cover when delegating them. Construction Engineering Practice Leader Darren Hartman will participate in the Friday panel discussion, “The Efficiency of the Connected Model.” The session, which starts at 8 a.m., focuses on the pros and cons of connected models using project examples. Principal Karen Grossett will highlight the key features of Pittsburgh International Airport’s terminal modernization $1.1-billion program in the Friday session “Branching Out: The Design and Construction Innovations Behind Pittsburgh’s New Terminal.” The 11 a.m. presentation will map out the creative solutions applied throughout the project, including its advanced foundation transfer system, creative roof structure and supporting tree columns. Hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction, the conference takes place in person as well as online. For more information, see the event’s website. https://lnkd.in/eVUx85p

In case you missed it, yesterday was World Theater Day! Created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute, the holiday celebrates the importance of the theater arts and its ability to bring people together. As anyone who has ever attended a performance knows, venue design can make or break the theater-going experience. Every seat, whether in the back house or in the front row, needs to have a clear view of the stage. Equally important are the acoustics, ensuring that the audience catches every nuance of the performance without hearing any backstage noises. Thornton Tomasetti is no stranger to the stage, having had our hand in many theater projects over the years. Our work includes David Geffen Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center (https://lnkd.in/e9Z5JdyD), The Stratford Festival’s Tom Patterson Theatre (https://lnkd.in/eP82_NGY) in Ontario, Canada, and an expansion for Chicago’s famed Steppenwolf Theatre (https://lnkd.in/e3Zt3c23), not to mention several collegiate theaters, including the University of California San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater (https://lnkd.in/euMxahe4). We also have a number of new projects on our boards, such as the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center at Hudson Valley Shakespeare (https://lnkd.in/ewNirdkb) in Garrison, New York. As William Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Whether it’s a cultural landmark or a beloved community staple, we’re proud to play our part in fostering the continued growth of theater in all its forms.

The wait is over! Today is the official start of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season. Baseball fans are known for their passion for the game and strong opinions on everything from player rankings to the designated hitter rule. So what's the general consensus on the best place to catch a game? It’s Chicago’s Wrigley Field (pictured), according to Sports Illustrated’s 2025 MLB ballpark rankings (https://lnkd.in/gNUkatfH). The second-oldest venue in the league, the home of the Chicago Cubs has plenty of historic charm along with some modern upgrades, thanks to a multiyear renovation program completed in 2019 (https://lnkd.in/erptviWS). Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design and construction engineering services to CAA ICON, Populous and Stantec for the project. Rounding out SI’s top five best stadiums for overall game experience are San Francisco’s Oracle Park (https://lnkd.in/eVvWtAxh), PNC Park in Pittsburgh (https://lnkd.in/e9b_VpTF), Boston’s Fenway Park and Petco Park in San Diego (https://lnkd.in/dJ_XRPxp), all of which are among the 15 MLB stadiums we’ve helped to build, renovate or repair. We’re also busy on number 16: the new Athletics stadium in Las Vegas (https://lnkd.in/eBsr82hE). Batter up!

From the turn-of-the-century Ingalls Building in Cincinnati to the 1-kilometer Jeddah Tower now rising in Saudi Arabia, reinforced concrete has paved the way for architectural and engineering innovations. Earlier this week, Founding Chairman Richard Tomasetti and architect and guest curator Thomas Leslie joined Carol Willis, director of New York City’s The Skyscraper Museum, in a panel discussion on how the material has shaped building design as part of the museum’s new exhibition, “The Modern Concrete Skyscraper.” Several Thornton Tomasetti projects, including Jeddah Tower and Petronas Twin Towers are featured in the program. The exhibit, which includes an online component (https://lnkd.in/emw2Z9qu), will run through August. Photos 1 and 2 courtesy Skyscraper Museum. Photos 3 and 4 Shalev Grunschlag/Thornton Tomasetti

The future of data centers is green. Many of the world’s leading hyperscalers are rethinking data center design and operations to align with ambitious sustainability goals. At the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon, next week, Thornton Tomasetti’s Alejandro Fernandez Alvarez De Buergo and Thomas Hooker, alongside Robert LoBuono, and John Ferns of Gensler, will talk about the growing use of engineered wood in data centers to reduce embodied carbon. The session, “Mass Timber in Datacenter Construction: Who Wood Have Thought?” looks at why and where mass timber makes sense for these projects as well as some of the design and construction challenges associated with its use. For more information, see the conference website. https://lnkd.in/eKsXJxmr #masstimberconference #masstimber
