What do you do when you can’t find good French bread? If you're Alice Couderc and Lucas Navilloz, you build a bakery from scratch. I spent a day with Alice to understand what a day in the life of a startup founder really looks like. Not in a boardroom or over a coffee—but while she was actually doing the work. Packing boxes, managing a team, leading check-ins, solving problems, jumping between tasks. The real stuff. Atome Bakery isn’t your average bakery. They’re not baking fresh loaves and selling it from store. Instead, they freeze the dough right at its peak moment, proofed and ready and send it directly to people across Canada and the US. So when you bake it at home, it comes out like it’s fresh from a French bakery. That idea didn’t come from a business plan. It came from frustration. Alice and Lucas moved from France to Vancouver and just couldn’t find the kind of bread they were used to. Lucas started baking at home, and it slowly snowballed from there friends asking, then friends of friends, and eventually a full fledged business. And it’s still a small team. Alice jumps between logistics, marketing, leadership, and packing boxes. They’ve outgrown their old space and are now building a bigger facility from the ground up. It’s scrappy. It’s smart. It’s grounded in real need. What stood out to me most was Alice’s attitude. She said something simple that stuck: “Every day is different. I never know what the day will bring when I walk in. But I’m happy to be here. I like what we’re building.” That mindset hit home for me. Because startup life is like that. Chaotic. Messy.
