  • From boardroom to kitchen, End Food Waste Australia’s unstoppable ‘The Great Unwaste’ Campaign Director Mandy Hall has been on a Melbourne mission this week, showing the tiniest of taste-testers how to fight food waste at the Sandro Demaio Foundation #littlefoodfestival ! #thegreatunwaste #endfoodwasteaustralia

Too precious, too powerful to waste. Campaign Director - End Food Waste AU - SA Woman of the Year 2025 Hospitality - MasterChef Alumni - Media Contributor - Presenter & Host - Writer - Food Judge - Ambassador.

Sometimes, getting the apron on is the best way to reconnect with purpose like today in Federation Square for the Little Food Festival Dr Sandro Demaio with Thanh Truong - The Fruit Nerd. In the midst of strategy, planning, and partnerships, it’s great to step back into the kitchen—where so many of our food stories begin. Whether it’s for a stage demo, a conversation about waste, or simply to share something made with heart, those moments matter. Because when we live the change we’re driving, everything becomes that little bit more meaningful. End Food Waste Australia #thegreatunwaste #foodwaste

  • New research reveals plenty of wheys to reduce dairy waste 🧀 When we think of food waste, we often picture damaged fruit or leftover meals. But did you know that whey, the liquid leftover after milk is turned into cheese, is a major contributor as well? Around 350,000 tonnes of whey are discarded annually, costing businesses $578 million. Despite retaining half the nutrients of milk, this valuable resource often goes to waste. Jack Hetherington's new research, funded by the University of Adelaide, the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre and CSIRO, shows that turning whey into valuable food products is more feasible than many think, with potential for industry-wide change. Hetherington’s report offers several key recommendations, including: 🍶Retailers stocking whey-based alternatives, giving consumers the choice to purchase them. 🍸Manufacturers collaborating to turn whey into valuable products, like vodka. 🗒️Developing clearer guidelines to help businesses - such as food safety protocols for upcycling whey. • How can we support Aussies farmers to sell more of their crops, and make the most of resources? That’s the question Melissa Smith, horticulture expert and farmer, explored last year through a global-first project.   Melissa was awarded a Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) fellowship, a prestigious program that allows Australians to travel overseas and bring back global best practices, made possible with the support of Hort Innovation and End Food Waste Australia.    The GROWING SOLUTIONS REPORT: Global Innovations Fighting Fruit and Vegetable Waste on Farms report - packed with insights, case studies and opportunities is out now - and features 7 actionable, "shovel-ready" recommendations for industry implementation.   "Through site visits, interviews, and collaborative discussions with industry leaders, I studied diverse approaches in different countries to identify adaptable solutions for the Australian context, " said Smith.    Melissa Smith’s Churchill Fellowship reveals that reducing on-farm food waste isn’t just a challenge, it’s an opportunity to drive a triple win - for the planet, people and for farmers' profits.   Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gq_BHuAz

  • The Australian Food Pact has just snagged the Business Services and Solutions Award at the 36th Banksia Foundation National Sustainability Awards! 🏆 This isn’t just any win, it’s a nod to the impact that can be made when we 👏🏽 all 👏🏽work👏🏽together! If you’re wondering why we won, it’s all down to this… Over the past 3 years, the #australianfoodpact has been supporting Signatories and seen real results - • A 13% reduction in food waste (that’s16,000 tonnes) in food waste compared to 2022 • 982,000 tonnes of repurposed food: including redistribution to food rescue charities for those in need, and upcycling food into innovative products like vegetable powders.  • $57 Million - the amount Signatories saved by reducing food waste in 2024 alone • 254 million meals – the amount of meals that have been donated to food rescue organisations by Signatories since 2022 • 505,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions have been saved since 2022 - the equivalent of taking 210,000 cars off the road for a year Australian Food Pact signatory Too Good To Go also took home a Banksia Award in the Technology for Impact category - congratulations! This year’s awards theme was ‘Optimism’, and we can safely say that with our results, and this acknowledgement from the Banksia Foundation, we are feeling pretty optimistic for what the future holds. If you grow, make, move, sell or buy food - you are an important part of ending food waste. Reach out if you want to be part of this *winning* initiative too.

  • "Just as Australians wouldn’t throw rubbish out of their car windows or step into the sun without sunscreen, I hope that reducing food waste becomes an everyday habit for everyone." This week our Campaign Director Mandy Hall chatted about #thegreatunwaste campaign and making food waste awareness "second nature" to Australians, with Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia's Mojdeh Kashani. It's a great read - with solutions, stats and a lot of shared passion. Access the full article below👇🏽 #endfoodwasteaustralia #thegreatunwaste

  • This week we welcomed the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation as a partner of The Great Unwaste, our behaviour change campaign dedicated to helping households reduce food waste. Through their #WasteSorted program, we'll be working together, supporting local councils across Western Australia, to encourage households to avoid food ending up in the bin. We know that the average household throws 265kgs of food waste in the bin a year, and partnerships like this are crucial when it comes to amplifying The Great Unwaste campaign. 🥦 Find out more about partnership opportunities at https://lnkd.in/gcwaNKyy   #TheGreatUnwaste #TurnFoodWasteAround #WasteSorted

🥫Cyclone Alfred Food Relief 🍝 Together with FareShare, we're responding to Ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred by delivering emergency food hampers filled with essential, nutritious items and cooked meals to people in urgent need. So far, between Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland, we have delivered the equivalent of 122,222 meals to people affected by this disaster – this includes SecondBite pantry staples, bottled water, and fresh fruit and veg, and FareShare ready-to-eat meals. These meals are often ideal for people struggling with a long recovery and/or who have lost access to their cooking facilities. These communities will need our support for some time to come, as they continue to clean up following this disaster. If you are able to help us continue to provide this support, please donate here: secondbite.org/emergency #CycloneAlfred #DisasterRelief #EmergencyRelief

  • This Food Waste Action Week, we're spotlighting real action in the fight against food waste. Here at End Food Waste Australia, our Cooperative Research Centre certainly drives a lot of action and you can swipe for some highlights. Research is at the heart of everything we do, it’s the key to finding smarter solutions, shifting policies, and driving real action, like transforming wine grape waste into high-value nutraceutical ingredients or understanding what behaviours need to change to reduce household food waste. Over the past seven years, our Cooperative Research Centre has been addressing food waste problems, building knowledge and capacity in industry and providing the evidence base for policy interventions and consumer behaviour change. Visit our website to find out more about our research action.   https://lnkd.in/gNxtekmF Francesca Goodman-Smith #foodwasteactionweek   WRAP
