What Is The Inside Story On Microbiome Therapeutic Applications? #Mysummary Here I list the TOP 5 therapeutic advancements in the past 5 years: 1. Fecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT) Gain Regulatory Approval 🔹2022–2023 saw the first-ever regulatory approvals of FMT-based products: Australia approved BiomeBank’s Biomictra and the U.S. FDA approved Ferring’s Rebyota (an enema-delivered FMT) and Seres/Nestlé’s Vowst (the first oral FMT capsule) for recurrent C. diff infections. 2. Engineered Probiotics as Living Medicines 🔹E. coli Nissle probiotic was reprogrammed to treat the metabolic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU). In a recent Phase 2 trial, patients drank a solution containing these engineered microbes, which were designed to break down excess phenylalanine (the amino acid that accumulates to toxic levels in PKU). The result was a significant drop in blood phenylalanine levels, indicating real clinical benefit. (2) 3. Microbiome-Targeted Drugs for Cardiovascular Health 🔹Certain gut bacteria convert dietary nutrients (like choline from red meat) into trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite that can promote artery clogging and heart disease. Researchers have identified small-molecule inhibitors that block the microbial enzymes responsible for this TMAO production, effectively shutting down a harmful pathway at its microbial source. (3) 4. Microbiome Modulation to Enhance Cancer Treatment 🔹 In a Phase 1 trial, patients with advanced melanoma who had not responded to PD-1 immunotherapy were given fecal microbiota transplants from patients who were immunotherapy responders. The result, some of these previously resistant patients started responding to the cancer drug after the microbiome transplant. (4) 5. Microbiome Therapies for Metabolic and Autoimmune Diseases 🔹The gut bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila, which is typically depleted in obesity and type 2 diabetes, has been tested as a next-generation probiotic. In a recent clinical study, overweight insulin-resistant individuals given Akkermansia (in pasteurized form) for three months saw significant improvements in metabolic health markers – including reduced insulin resistance, lower blood cholesterol, and decreased body fat – compared to a placebo. (5) HAPPY to hear your THOUGHTS and stay POSITIVE! #Mythoughts Now, what is next? Educating the patients first. #Myinspiration “The creative adult is the child who survived.” Julian F. I have a habit of sitting next to the coolest people at events - it's a gift. Yesterday it was Andrew Lai from SMEC AI and Merlin Luck from Salesforce. Andrew told me about AI pathfinder - a FREE AI development program. It’s for first time founders and founding teams, whether you have an existing idea or are starting from scratch. Over the course of 8-weeks, you’ll utilise frameworks and tactics to help you avoid the common first-time founder pitfalls and transform your idea into a fast growth venture. The next cohort is open to eligible founders and SMEs based in Australia and starts TONIGHT. It's also Funded by the Australian Government, so AI pathfinder is free and focused on new SME AI ventures. I'm IN!! I signed up immediately. Savannah this would be great for some of your founders. https://lnkd.in/gBq_ePas Merlin talked through #agentforce but really about the three phases of AI and the applications for small businesses to create an event better customer experience. Also around the security of your employees going rogue using their own ChatGPT accounts. Thanks to Siew Lee Seow and Jerome Laxale MP for putting on this event.
