🌿 One material. Many possibilities. ✨ A first look at our prototype film — made from Uluu’s seaweed-based PHA. It’s a powerful demonstration of just how versatile our material can be. From packaging to textiles, we’re building a platform technology to replace plastic across industries. Our PHA is produced using saltwater microbes, seawater, and seaweed — a regenerative material, made the way nature would. Huge thanks to our brilliant team for continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible!
About us
Uluu is an exciting new biomaterial that's incredible for our oceans and climate. It fights global warming by sequestering carbon in anything, and everything, that's built with it. It's biodegradable - so it won't harm our environment or the creatures living in it. And, it's made from seaweed - an amazing, renewable resource, which cleans up our oceans, promotes marine biodiversity, yet doesn’t displace precious farmland. Uluu - reviving the world.

Watch Uluu textiles take shape! 🧵👕 This is Melt Spinning in action - the process of turning our Uluu pellets into continuous fibres. The molten material is drawn into fine filaments, stretched, and wound onto bobbins, ready to be knitted into textiles. Exciting progress towards high-performance, ocean-friendly fashion! 🌊 Deakin University ARC Research Hub for Future Fibres Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE)

What a fantastic workshop we’ve had: CSIRO's Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform all assembled in sunny Melbourne for two days of science, insight, networking and conversations. I’d particularly like to thank Ben and Simon from BioNTech SE and Geoff from Uluu for attending and for giving us their industry-based insights into the importance of engineering biology in the future of Australian biotech with two amazing presentations. Wonderful to have such enthusiastic involvement from industry colleagues!

🔎 Did you know that when Uluu extracts sugars from seaweed to create our plastic alternative we’re left with a protein-rich seaweed by-product? We plan to sell this seaweed co-product as a vegan substitute for animal protein, starting with replacing fishmeal in aquaculture feed. 🐟 Fishmeal is an ingredient made from wild-caught fish that contributes to overfishing and climate change. The first aquafeed pellets using Uluu's co-product were recently produced by our R&D partners David Francis and Michael Salini from Deakin University. These pellets will be fed to abalone just a few steps away from Uluu's laboratory as part of feeding trials run by Cecile Dang and Hosna Gholipour-Kanani from WA's Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development in collaboration with 888 Abalone. We'll be watching the abalone closely, and are super excited by the potential of this work to enhance ocean health and pave the way for a more sustainable future for aquaculture. If you're a feed or food producer interested in a sample, please reach out to us at hello@uluu.com.au.

As the 5th United Nations Ocean Forum concludes, we’re enthusiastic about the future! The forum’s sessions, on topics like blue finance and marine technology, showed the huge potential of our oceans to drive environmental sustainability and economic growth. In the lead up to the final session on the UN Plastics Treaty in Geneva, it was also great to have had the opportunity to showcase how farmed seaweed & PHAs (as a plastic substitute) are uniquely positioned to decouple our materials economy from fossil fuels and persistent pollution. A big thanks to UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for the invitation to contribute, and to all organisers, speakers and fellow participants for their inspiring work.
